D.S. Linux

Has anyone tried making a portable mini computer and monitor with D.S. Linux That can directly connect to the HVX or any camera for that matter for storage? Just a thought! It would be much cheaper and more flexible than the firestore.

If you want to be cheaper, you can use a firewire drive, but you'll need to record to P2 first. Otherwise, you could use a program like OnLocation in Windows. If I were designing something from scratch I could see the advantages of Linux, but there's so much out there already, and there's no way that most of us would be able to create something as reliable as the firestore.

I've done this for regular DV capture before, and it works very well. But since GNU/Linux doesn't seem to have support for DVCPROHD, there's no way (that I can tell) to capture live video from the HVX direct to disk with the HVX.

Interestingly enough, it would seem there is now HDV support available, which is a step in the right direction.

That's just it. The firestore from my experience isn't all that reliable. We used them at a news station and they only lasted about 2 weeks in the field before ALL 7 of them didn't work. Now they aren't made for that kind of abuse, I know, but I want something that can take that kind of abuse. I was just thinking a cheap solution would be building a mini computer that has a hard drive attached to it. I was just curious if anyone had successfully done this. I would think that it wouldn't matter if it was linux compatible as long as you used it for storage and then transferred from that storage to another computer.

It does matter -- unless you're just going to capture to P2 cards, and then put the HVX into USB device mode, and transfer the files to your custom PC that way. Then you can use any OS you want. But if you want to capture directly to the hard drive, you'll need a program that is capable of capturing the live DVCPROHD stream from the camcorder -- and sadly Linux can't do this yet.
