I have the Dfocus V3 for my GH2 and I love it. I'm using the zip tie gears with it... best experience I've had with a FF so far.

I have one. It's a cheap piece of plastic, but it gets the job done and doesn't have any perceptible lag when set to the gears snuggly. It will be one of the first pieces of kit I replace when I come into a bit of money, though. Not what I personally would regard as pro gear, but it's great to learn on.

Looks to me like a nice, well made, cost-effective introduction to FF... I've been planning to order one recently, and will probably get the D|Mount as well to use without rails. If it doesn't fall apart with good use, I imagine it'll also hold a pretty decent price on the 2nd hand market for when you want to upgrade to something more pro.

My personal warning against the D|Mount: though I like the D|Focus well enough, the D|Mount I ordered with it for quick, handheld, stolen shots was an absolute piece of junk. The D|Focus kept slipping away from the gears on the lens no matter how tight it was attached to the D|Mount! I was very disappointed. Who knows? Maybe I got a bad unit, but I've since learned not to trust anything less than a rail system.

What's your experience with FF's?

I've tried the IndiSystems pro and "mini" version. I've also had friends with the CineCity or low cost Ebay versions that I've played around with.

I guess I should have stated that my experience includes the fairly low end of follow focuses. But I'd say the D-Focus is near the top of the budget category of FF devices. And the zip tie gears I love.

What I've learned after years of wasting money upgrading: buy once, cry once.

i just wanted to chime and say the advantage the d3 has over other follow focus's is the dialogue Dave exchanges with his customers.

Email me. We made some revisions to the D|Mount and its much better now. One of the issues is that it worked well with the D|Focus V2 but the changes we made to the V3 made the D|Mount less effective. I still recommend a rail system for the best "follow focus experience" though. The D|Mount is meant as a much more affordable alternative for someone that just wants to get a follow focus on their DSLR.

Just to clarify - This is NOT true. The V3 has a completely different gearbox design with 48 pitch miter gears instead of 32. The V3 also has the newer knob w/ 3D marking disc and the rail mount is 1/4" thinner.
