FS7: Cyclo Cross

My usual mayhem of covering an event I know nothing about and smashing out an edit within 12 hours.

Mish did some Bcam on my 400 2.8 and his nikon Z6.

AF performance is interesting. He did the double jump and some other spots while I concentrated on the story elements.

Some real nice shots in there. I love shooting anything that involves mud. Perfect light for it, too.

Thanks.

It was very interesting ref some other posts going on here..

The nikon Z6!

Firstly it is so easy to mount the lens on the tripod and hang the tiny camera off the back, and not touch it because you are using AF. no jitter.

Im still trying to compute the focus thing, basically the AF misses.. but so do I .. if the AF catches it is completely good until it wanders off.

Nice Morgan. Many years ago, I used to race A LOT of cyclocross. You captured the spirit of the sport.

Also, that drone footage (I presume) of the spiral was nice. I'm kinda done with drones-as-cheap-tracking-helicopters. But you found a frame and view that was really cool.

It is my intention to capture 'decisive moments' (coming from stills) - there is so many and they are fast pre race tension thought to the release of completion. Its hard on me and the kit - I was really hating the FS7 wrapped in a bin bag as a non ergonomic solution.

I appreciate that as a racer you 'get' some of the moments I got.

The drone.. what fooking pain.. you have to prep those things.. we missed most of the action as the thing was updating firmware over 3g or not talking to controller or whatever.. but we got the one shot that worked, just not with the biggest field of riders. (Paul was doing stills and the drone too)

I edited on my laptop which is not really set up. My imac cant handle the modern codecs without a transcode which there was no time for.

The colour is therefore IMO not ideal :)

The FS7 was shot Slog 2 and had arri logC LUT applied, usually Id use Slog2->709a lut - but didnt have it on my laptop
The nikon Z6 was on neutral or flat (not Nlog) and just had a small Scurve applied

I added some grain stock footage with a bit of brown tinge on top of everything.

SHould I revisit the project I want to go way more gritty/retro, probably with a riased red or blue channel.
A bit like this which has a raised blue channel..

I think the inspiration would be this era.. which is highly saturated but innacurate in colour

Great work Sam. Really nice range of shots and covered all the narrative moments despite battling the elements! Having covered a march in pouring rain recently and had a viewer say "Oh, I didn't even see it was raining!", I'm realising (like most things in moving image work) that if you do your job right in shitty conditions, then the viewer should basically not notice them!

Cheers,

jason
