Cyclic Error?

After shooting a bunch of clips with the GH1, I transfered them to my computer. I then transfered from the computer to an external hard drive to back them up.

During the transfer, the process was interupted saying "file .013 cyclic error"

This has happened several times and with different files.

Does anyone know what' going on?

Sounds like a disk hardware error to me. "Cyclic error" could me "cyclic redundancy check error" which is otherwise known as a CRC error. CRC is a disk hardware validation check done by the disk controller; it essentially computes a number based on the bit values the controller writes to the disk and compares that number to what it reads from the disk. If the 2 numbers match the data is considered OK. If they differ the controller reports a write error.

I'd run a disk error check on your external drive. Be sure it's the "long" check that tests every sector. This can take a long time (hours) but disk controllers are smart enough to flag bad tracks and assign alternates. So you might end up with no data loss and also prevent future problems by alternate track substitution.
