CX350 and different Gammas

Hello,

I am starting to use my CX350 more so I am focused on setting it up. In going through the scene file settings I was experimenting with the different gamma choices and have found that not that much changes between them outside of HLG. Reading through Barry's book it seems quite a lot should be different between the choices. Am I missing something?

I setup a little scene with some overexposed highlights in an effort to see which gamma did the best with highlight retention. I went through and selected each gamma individually and came back out of the menu just make sure it was selected but seriously, there is not a visual difference between all of these gammas unless you pick HLG. With other Panasonic cameras a stroll through gammas produced quite obvious differences.

Anybody else noticed this and thanks for your help.
 
Yes, I have DRS engaged. Thanks. I will do some more testing. The DRS feature was very useful on the PX270. Which one do you think will give me the most mileage for highlights on the CX350 - DRS or one of the gammas with some knee gymnastics?

Can I use White Clip with the gammas? It seems to do more than DRS.
 
Turn DRS off and you'll see drastic changes with the gammas. DRS replaces the gamma, so gamma is disabled when DRS is on.

White clip does nothing for adding DR, it can only take DR away. For max DR, leave it off or at its highest setting.

Filmlike 3 or HLG are the two gammas that have the most highlight range, by far.
 
Thanks Barry. I am integrating this camera into my workflow, so I will have more questions going forward. I will post them so we can all benefit from the little nuances and your wisdom if that is ok? :)
