GH4 is on it's way, which will serve me as a b-cam to FS700. Did anyone already tried to cut them together? Which profiles, what to keep in mind when setting them up?
Thanks!
I cut both together, in a project and found the following:
The difference between 4K DCI and 1080P AVCHD was small, so small that unless you're shooting F/8 wide shots at infinity you're going to not see a big detail difference (this was with the X series 12-35 f.28 lens, vs canon 24-105 F/4L, while viewing on a 30" 2560x1600 display)
The highlight detail on the GH4 has a pretty poor knee compared to SLOG2, so be careful if you have hot spots that are hard to control, like a bright sunny day.
I chose to shoot Slog2 on the FS700, and CineLike D with the saturation -2 on the GH4.
Saturation out of the box on the GH4 is really really high, knock it down in camera with a profile to taste.
I graded with Filmconvert to get the cameras to match, but skintones were always candy colored even with knocking down saturation by -2. I would have knocked it down more since the GH4 loves to saturate oranges.
In post, I exported a DPX sequence at UHD resolution, and a DNxHD at 1080P resolution as a proxy to grade in Resolve. Could only get RealTime performance with the DNxHD (it was a processing issue, since I had it on a 500MB/s SSD)
Swapping the proxy out to the online UHD sequence didn't make a difference in my masks, even when zooming up to 100% You'll always feather them to a point where its good enough.
At the end of the day I wish I would have had 2 FS700s and not bothered with 4K, since it added another layer of upscale complexity + online/offline workflow in Resolve. Also the images from the FS700 just LOOKED better than the GH4 due to the tonality, and colors after using FilmConvert.
Many, many thanks for your thorough and detailed explanation Demistate! Just to be sure 100%, you've been shooting internal AVCHD on fs700 the whole time, no 7Q here? I'll be shooting same, maybe one of them to Ninja Star (yet to decide with which one, as I've got onlt one - on gh4 it'll mean no 4K).
I have to read it like 10 times to wrap my head around everything and then I will come back with some more questions
Anyway, many many thanks!
