FS7: Custom Slog3

Today I tried back-light scene mixed light and a lot of white.

Used Custom with slog3 and white balance (inside) (4400K)
Outside I switched to 5600K
Viewfinder is good without Lut.
master black -3 no other settings
Best of both worlds or not? Or am I missing more differences between Cine IE and Custom Slog3 ?

(Color of the table is a bit purple/cyan, correct as in the image) (On my samsung 4K televisio the whites are more bright and the blacks nice black).

I was hesitating to use CineEI for long time and used Slog3 custom instead but with a LUT Slog3-to-CineEI I made in LUTcalc. Not too bad but not 100% CineEI

Most people on this forum seem to feel that using a Slog2 or Slog3 gamma in Custom mode is a poor substitute for Slog and CineEI. They are probably right, but I use Slog gammas and Custom mode often. Before I bought the FS7, I mainly used a Canon C300 with the Wide DR picture profile. I think Custom mode and Slog gamma looks similar to the Wide DR profile. Like you, I also lower the black level slightly and sometimes increase matrix gain slightly. It's a nice look, but if the production requires maximum flexibility in post, I think CineEI and Slog3 makes more sense.

Has anyone ever demonstrated the difference between custom slog3 and EI mode?

Thinking back to the first days of the camera I probably rejected custom slog due to a lack of internal lut support.

Now I have abandoned internal luts as a waste of space it would be interesting to revisit.

Noise wise I'm sure custom high ISO is better than under exposed slog.

Click white balance could speed up post too.

Which Pre Set matrix and which matrix settings do you use with Slog in Custom? I think I need to try this.

Only thing I changed was master black -3 and noise reduction medium. No matrix settings, no nothing else. I have no idea what the matrix is anyway :-)

In Resolve I apply the Arri Lut almost standard. Gives a bit more contrast than the Sony Luts available in Davinci Resolve.

I remember, in the early days of the camera, user Star Central posting quite a bit of info on slight color differences between these two modes (if memory serves, he was doing so more with F55 than with FS7 - but I think the same concept applied).
I've always found it fascinating that the maker of these camera's seem pretty mum on any difference.

As i remember, the camera needs to be properly white balanced to avoid magenta shift.

Its not good enough to throw a LUT on CineEI, it needs post-balancing else there will be magenta shift. I read recently that Sony intended that the green/magenta balance to be done in post, so that will explain the magenta look pre-grade.

In custom you white balance on white, and good to go. I just shot a long doc with custom to get 8000 ISO indoors (no lighting what so ever) and with NR, WB, XAVC-L 50, and HG7 the results look amazing. Lovely colors and saturation. Very little noise too.

If you are a doc shooter you need to make friends with custom. Cine EI works great for all outdoor shooting with high dynamic range. In low contrast, lowlight mixed lighting scenarios you will get better results in Custom with HG8/7 and Slog2 dropping the blacks as the scene requires.
