F55: Custom mode with HG7 gamma shoot aftermath

Shot a rush job the other day where footage was handed off to producers at the end of the night so chose custom mode for ISO/gain selection in-camera, as well as white balance capability. They told me "no grading" up front.

This is HG7 ISO 2000 with minor tweak using Catalyst Browse. It's not bad I guess. I wish I had thought to sneak a couple seconds of slog3 s.gamut3.cine for playing around later but didn't.

I gave them a copy of Catalyst Browse since they will need to do their own transcoding, so currently I'm seeing if they will at least take a few CDL exports from Catalyst Browse I can create to "tweak" the footage a bit. Hopefully they will go for it.

Looks good. I've been trying to decide if going with hypergammas or burning in a lut is better for minimal post situations. I keep meaning to do the same and run off some footage under the same real set conditions to see which I prefer.
Its always a tough situation when you want to produce the best images possible but the there is no budget to take it through the back end proper colour.

Really nice work there Dennis.

Last year I had to shoot an entire show for ID Discovery with a baked in profile.
I started with HG7 but moved to HG4 after a few episodes. In high contrast scenarios I felt HG4 was a little more reliable.
Not sure what firmware that was at the time.

For your low key scene however, HG7 sure looks like the way to go.

glad you guys like it and thanks for the comments.

I didn't have any real reason to shy away from CineEI mode with LC709A baked in, I just thought for this particular project I would give HG a whirl. Plus on the F5/F55/FS7 the HG7 has the same dynamic range as the F3 did in slog mode (800%). So I wasn't too concerned about dynamic range or anything. Also they weren't exactly looking for a specific look, in fact they had been planning to shoot it on a GH2.

Here is the tweak to the master gamma channel and as usual the red channel pulled down a bit. I think I did a small green channel adjustment too.

Nice jog Dennis, looks good. Since you were in Custom what color Matrix were you using? My "go to" is Cinema at +40.

Thanks Bill.

Matrix was set to off. The F55 has a bit different set of matrix presets and I don't think 'cinema' is included. One matrix that I liked with the F3 was the FL one, it rendered bright light sources like the sun setting in the sky very nicely.

I guess another reason I opted for custom mode was because I wasn't sure what color temps I was going to run into with any of the existing lighting, so being locked to three presets in CineEI mode wouldn't have given me the flexibility I needed. Other scenes included office space and a washroom with overhead flo's, etc..

I really hope to see the color space updated in custom mode or WB options come to CineEI mode.

Totally forgot the 55 has different matrix presets. Yup, anytime I want to burn LC709A and the client wants it handed off and says there will be no grading or correction, I start leaning towards the Hypergammas if the lighting is mixed. Please.... Sony, WB options in CineEI
