FS7: Custom LUT usefulness

<sarcasm alert>

You guys are dinosaurs. Letting the software control things is where it is at today. Just put the camera on a Movi rig, let the camera self-focus and self-control the iris. All you have to do as "Operator", since no one zooms in shot anymore, is pan and tilt the camera. The operator being "one" with the camera, being "in" the shot as a result of looking into an eyepiece, the operator having to use their body to stabilize the shot, the operator having full control of the camera- that's all so archaic and outdated. You old farts need to work on disconnecting yourselves from the camera and experience the joy of operating looking at the shot on an LCD screen that is 3 feet away, being washed out by sunlight ( "we need MORE nits!!" ), and competing with reflections.

I mean, just look how happy is the bearded hipster Cam Op! He's got almost nothing to do but smile and look good in flannel!!-

JP.. you have it all wrong sir.. the shiny LCD is not for seeing the frame.. how could it be.. there's a rats chance in hell of actually seeing frame, focus etc.. the mirror is for checking man bun position.. or adjustments to flannels caused by easy rig. . itself a bit of a wimps alternative and tends to obscure tribal and Chinese character tattoos.. which we want young actress to see.. or at least nubile under paid Makeup artist..

Oh - I like the turn this thread has taken now...
Ben, Donny & JP - you mean you guys aren't divine hipsters like the rest of us? :happy:
To circle this back to JP's original question - using & burning in that custom lut will totally "force a client to use your creative commitment". And then ye shall be one of the chosen. C'mon man, don't let those cats in the grading room dictate what YOUR scene means.

Saw this and presumed it was a RED commercial.. the worrying thing is there is truth behind the parody .. !.. what happened to the Anarak wearing ..bad hair cut, cheap running shoes.. cameraman.. maybe just name left ..

Just curious. What do you think the odds are that Sony will do another firmware upgrade for the FS7?

I wish they would and I mentioned earlier a number of things that I suspect would not be that hard and would make the camera both more useable and more competitive but i doubt they will do anything substantive. They had a chance to make changes with the MkII and aside from the variable ND and some other good mechanical changes they left the menus completely alone. Sony got rid of 2 top managers with Juan Martinez and Mel Medina who were very focused on user input to product development. I don't know much about Sony internal politics but I suspect they just don't care that much . Just a wild guess though.

I remember Juan saying something along the lines of "there's a road map for updates to the FS7 fw " early on around v 2.0 or so...hoped it to mean that they had things planned out beyond 4.0...
I'm with you Lenny - at this point in the product life cycle - updates to menu / lut system might sound minor but could make it more user friendly

I still find it surprising that no user develops any software upgrades of their own for the Fs7 or the C300. No hacks like the hacks that users developed for the GH cameras and the GoPro. ( I use the hack some 15 yr old kid developed that will allow the GoPro to do timelapse intervals of any length you want. ) People develop aftermarket "chips" for automobiles that re-map the engine software and get more performance out of the engine. A user-developed hack that allows the Sony fs7 monitor LUT on / off to be assigned to one of the assignable buttons- would that be difficult for a code-savvy person to create?

Or to think of it a different way -- would you be willing to beta test a hack that might brick your FS7 just to get the functionality of an assignable on/off monitor LUT button? Or would you be willing to personally commit the huge number of hours it might take to create the hack, again possibly bricking your cameras along the way? I think your time would be better spent talking to / emailing your Sony product rep and contacts to convince them that it's a feature that would result in increased sales.

The F5 was hacked by Paul Ream. Maybe he could have a go.

I believe he argued that it wasn't even a hack.. Sony had been naive and just left everything open and he just typed a couple of words into the script.. rather than actively "hacking" into protected software.. . but very glad he did.. saved me having to sell my f5 for a f55..
