Custom Curves and ViewNX Picture Control Utility

Hey guys, whats your recommended results and favourite settings?

I haven't had much luck with using them. I've been used to just using neutral and vivid and such without custom curves.

Tinkered about by crushing the blacks and doing silly patterns on the graph but I just can't seen to make anything that really stands out as whoa.

I enjoy using "white wedding" as a custom curve. I only use it for stuff shot in the day/dusk but nothing darker than that. It increases the dynamic range a bit.

that's where i got mine. there's a trick to it. you open view NX...make sure you have your card reader already in the usb port or it won't work, go to import and select the custom curve you want...then export and save the name and it goes straight to your card...put the card in your camera and voila...custom curves. i only used the white wedding...never got aroudn to anything else...curves died once RAW becaome overwhelmingly popular.

i use my own curve that i'm still working on that is designed for grading and noise minimizing / compression maximizing. the idea is that i pull the shadows up so i can push them back down thus get rid of some of the blocky shadow noise, then i stole the top part from white wedding which i in turn changed ro include another twist of the curve near the end so that full white is still full white, otherwise you reduce the dynamic range rather than increase it, while you avoid some clipping you also lose the gradient, which you notice when you start grading it, banding highlights are no fun. i'm on version 3 now and it's getting better and better, currently experimenting with saturation too, there's obviously a sweetspot somewhere. i'll post the curve when i'm done testing.

the format on that site works fine btw.

I downloaded the pack. Got the memory card in the USB, but when I load up Picture Control Utility but whats the best curve to adjust? Neutral or Standard? fotogenetic_point_and_shoot_v41.ntc

And what exactly is the difference with Neutral, Standard, Vivid, Portrait etc with the same curves applied to each?

Cheers.

don't overwrite those....create a new one...call it what you want. you can have like 50 something custom curves in your camera...maybe less or more.

the difference between neutral and standard are hard to tell a difference kind of a washed out look, very neutral as it's stated....vivid on the other hand has the saturation pushed pretty high and the contrast...making your colors really pop and your blacks really crushed.

you have to base them on one though unless i've missed something. then you can save it as your own. a curve is not a setting, it just controls the brightness and contrast parameters. you can't upload a curve to the camera, just full "controls". i think the only real difference between the presets once you use a custom curve is the saturation and sharpness.

iirc you just click import. again, it's not a setting but a curve that you apply to one of your existing settings in viewnx.
