GH4 Custom cage for the Gh4 + Atomos Shogun

Hey guys,

I was thinking about how useful of a tool the Shogun will be but how unflattering it looks on top of such a small camera. Has anyone (with design skills) thought about coming up with a render of a GH4 cage (or add on accessory to cage) that could mount a Shogun horizontally so a unit could be self contained.

I have attached a horrible illustration. Thoughts or does a 15mm mount bracket exist to mount an Atomos recorder at this level?

"Unflattering"? It's a camera, not a sports car. Who really cares if it's sexy or not?

It would be pretty simple to rig what you've drawn- two normal rails coming off the back of the camera/cage, and a single 15mm clamp with a small ballhead mounted on top. Shogun mounts to the ballhead. Done.

But is it really going to be that useful? It's not going to really work for handheld or shoulder use. It'll work on sticks at a medium height but what if you need to go low or high? And you'll be blocking the camera LCD and EVF, and making the controls harder to get to/see. You're basically recreating the Blackmagic toaster/box shape, and look at what lengths people go to to fix those cams' ergonomics.

Hi Bleek,
As a previous owner of a C100 / Ninja 2 combo, I know what its like to have an external recorder creating an unbalanced setup especially when top mounted on the cameras hot shoe or hanging off the side on a magic arm. I don't use the Ninja for that reason anymore.

Your design has its merits in that its centre of balance is good for tripod use, and if it works for you then go for it (ignoring our 2 friends bullish comments above) It could be quite easy to create the setup with a set of rear facing 15mm rods. However, you'd need to think about other setups such as shoulder mounting , handheld use, as this might not be practical.

I for one would love a Shogun, but a part of me loves the small, simple form factor of the GH4. However, if Panasonic enable some really cool new features on the GH4 for use with the Shogun then I'd be all over it! I read that there are to be some "nice surprises" for A7s owners on the release of the Shogun...

If the Shogun ever does ship, I would think you would want to mount it with something along the lines of a Noga arm so your could position the monitor appropriately for viewing.
