Custom Cable Makers

Hey all,

I'm wondering if any of you out there know of any custom cable makers? I currently have been using Alvin's Cables, but he's very slow to respond and we're in completely different time zones. He does a great job, but just wondering what other options are out there.

When I say custom, I mostly mean standard types of cables, just at custom lengths. For example, I've been looking for a shorter DTap to DC cable for awhile, and cannot find one. Around 12".

Thanks,
Dan

Most rental houses can do this for you for a basic rate as they need to make stuff for themselves all the time. You can find someone local and build a relationship.

I often make my own cables, but there are some connectors, such as Lemos, that are just a pain. Interestingly, three people I know who made custom cables no longer do. One passed away, two just decided to stop. So I've bought a few cables recently from Remote Audio (a sister company of Trew Audio); they've all been well made (solid components, good soldering, good strain relief, etc) and reasonably priced. I bought off-the-rack, but know people who've had them make custom cables and they're also satisfied.

And they make all sorts of cables, not just audio cables.

So someone local, as Mitch suggests, is a great idea. But if you can't find someone, I'll recommend Remote.

Here are some of the D-Tap/P-Tap cables they make:

And here's the custom-order form that will get things started:

I've been using Redco Audio for cables of all kinds, not just audio. The website will let you specify a lot, but sometimes it's easier to just call 'em on the phone and talk to them about what you want. You can for instance ask for a cable that's particularly flexible, and they can tell you what your choices are for your application -- this isn't something you can easily find on their custom cable pages.

They also have a huge range of connectors from an equally large range of suppliers. So if you have favorites Redco can usually supply you.

They've always been fairly fast, reasonably priced, and easy to work with for me. Of course YMMV.

The practical profit on making a cable like this works out to around £30 here in the UK and the customer would have to shell out around £60 with parts and tax to consider. If you could make and sell lots then it's a solid income stream. One-offs far less so, because you need the connectors in your stock, or you have to increase turnaround times - and then the total hassle for the £30 might just not be worth it.

Nice to see Redco on this list. Have never thought about ordering cables from them but I have had them make a series of custom patch panels for my carts and they have been really responsive to make sure everything was covered, investing more time than the relatively inexpensive panels themselves cost. Big thumbs up on service.
