Hey folks,

Last year I wanted to buy a GH2 but wife always prevented me from buying. Finally, she told me she'll buy me a GH2 just not sure if this coming Thanksgiving or as a Christmas gift. LOL! :)

I currently own a Canon 50D. I have magic lantern installed on it. Honestly, the resulting video(no sound) is just ok. I use it 95% for still photography. I would like to know if it's worth keeping my Canon 50D once I acquire a GH2. I would like to convert it back to $$.

Any counseling will definitely help me. :)

Thanks a lot!

Neil

Well, as the former owner of a 50D and former owner of a GH1...I can say that I personally loved the 50D for photography...just the way the controls felt, the ergonomics, the bright optical viewfinder, and the images. The Panasonic can do great with photos as well...but it wasn't as much fun on that side for me as the 50D. The video experience however, was fantastic! Just depends what your main focus is.

I also want to learn videography. For now, I want to capture great looking videos just like the videos taken by my TM700. However, I wanted to use my vintage lenses such as the Rokkor 58mm 1.4 or Asahi Takumar 50mm on future GH2 to achieve blur backgrounds on video.

Is the 50D still with you? Will I be able to do bracketing shots on GH2? What about bulb mode?

On lcd display on the GH2, can we zoom in on a specific area? I like this feature on the 50D because I am able to turn the focus ring to focus on that area.

I always kept using all my Nikon and Canon cams for stills and used the GH1/2 for video only and the reason for this is that I simply never tried making stills with the GH1 and GH2 and when shooting on the set I like to have different cams for different purposes. I mainly use a Nikon D300 for stills which is quite noisy above ISO400, the GH2 has the same problem, so there is no point using the GH2, but if I end up buying the GH3 and stills look comparable or better than the D300, I'll probably get rid of the D300, 7D, and everything else. The only thing I would worry about is how to trigger my flash units using the radio controls that work on my Nikon and Canon cams. Let me add that I don't see any quality difference between stills taken with Nikon, Canon or Panasonic cams. Usually when the light is right, the photo is also right. The only reason I prefer to use Nikon cams it's because of ergonomics. Nikon cams feels natural in my hands, Canon cams don't. So I was really hoping Nikon would come with a camera comparable to the GH2 one day, with same video capabilities (including full manual control). Let's never forget that Nikon brought video mode to DSLR cams!

The GH2 has a focus assist which zooms in on the center of the image, provided that you are not recording and using a Lumix lens and you don't have anything connected to the hdmi plug. This is a very helpful feature, I use it all the time and wish it would also work during recording. I hope they will add it to the GH3.

I think your best option is to wait until you have the GH2 in hand. Play with it for a while, then you'll be able to decide for yourself if it's good enough for stills as well as video.

That's very true! I was thinking about that.

By the way, what do you think about the images that will be taken by my future GH2 and Rokkor 58mm f1.4 and Asahi Takumar 50mm f1.4? I'm also looking for a wide angle lens. Any suggestions?

Jim Simon, I found this -> http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/panasonic_lumix_dmc_gh2_review/sample_images/

I looked at the raw images using irfanview(with plugins). Those raw images are awesome! It's even sharper than my Canon 50D! I don't think I'll get disappointed with this camera. :)
However, I'm aware that in order to achieve high quality image, the lens has to be really good.

For wide angle lens, which lens is extremely sharp?
