With more and more feature film work being shot on video I was curious, is current 'high end' video indistinguishable from film to the expert eye?
Or only to the untrained eye?
And, what percentage of 'feature film' work is being shot on film as opposed to video?
If you were to show on the big screen, yeah people with trained eyes would be able to spot it, but not most of the audience. Video to me is too clean and has less dynamic range, but the Alexa does a pretty good job at coming close.
As someone who's transfered several video projects to film, I'd say that it depends.
First, how well was it shot? If it's lit & composed properly, it will look "filimic" or "film-like".
Second, what kind of video camera are we talking, here? There's quite a range from Flip to digital cinema cameras. Cheap, small chip cameras tend to look like cheap small chip cameras, regardless of how well they've been handled. Having to blend 60i to 24P tends to sacrifice quite a lot of picture quality, even if you use an Alchemist or Teranex.
Finally, who cares? Certainly not the genera audience. Not even most pros. Your audience is really concerned with having a good experience. If you have a good story, and tell it well, if you have good characters who connect with the audience, then all of the technical crap will be invisible to them, unless it's so distracting that it gets in the way.
