cukoloris pattern & making one...

Re: cukoloris pattern & making one...

foam core cookies are passe...the best way to project a pattern is with a pattern projector. a leko or source 4 light fixture that has lenses for focusing or de-focusing the pattern and a holder for the pattern. Significantly more control of your pattern.
There are hundreds of patterns available from rosco, gam and others for about $12 each. just received the gam book with 600 patterns shown. plus they can make anything you want.
A source 4 jr. costs about $300 with wide, medium and tele lenses. Get the stand adapter, they come without any mounting method. most are attached to a pipe clamp for theatre rigging.

Re: cukoloris pattern & making one...

I hate, hate, hate leko's personally. But lighting is one of those things where there are a million correct opinions.

I'm experienced with lekos from my time in theatrical lighting design. I think they work well up in the grid above an audience, but for production work they retain too much heat to be useful for fast setups and moves. Not to mention that they're quite heavy, very unbalanced and super directional with a limited beam spread.

but again, I'm very biased against them, so you probably shouldn't trust my opinion.

Okay lets look at the mathematics:

Your way, a leko $200
There are hundred patterns available at $12
ten patterns $120
A bulb for the leko that burns out every 500 hours or if I hit the fixture too hard $60. Then i have to lug this fixture around with me without manhandling it.

So if go your way I spend about $400. And I get a very unnatural pattern that looks like a projected leko. I also don't have quick and easy manipulation of said patterns. In other words I put in a venation blind, i get a venetian blind, no other option.

My way:

I happen to have about 50 strips of foam core that I took from the David Letterman show a while back but if you had to buy foam core say you spent $15.

With that piece of foam core you could create about 10 very distinct and different patterns with one pice and one light of your choice. And that piece of foam core could last years in your light kit.

Even on studio programs I have given up on lekos and the like as they look like lekos, not like something natural.

As for it being passe, I will bet of the 15 to 20 programs that air every day around the world that are my work, I used a foam-core cut-out on probably 19 of them. They're not passe where I come from, just one of the greatest accessories you could carry in your kit.

a key grip on a safe sex, mtv spot asked a third to make a cuke and he came back with a 4x4 piece of foamcore with testes and penis cut outs. it fit the subject matter and was used after we stopped laughing.

Re: cukoloris pattern & making one...

You could also use some lighter type of wood. I´ve seen these type of cukoloris at rental places. Looks like they do cut them out themselve too.
They look absolutly home made.. Just paint the board black and cut out the pattern with a saw you´ll have something that last longer then the foamcore.

i haven't actually put it together yet but you can get SUPERSIZE c-47 clips at a hardware store and then buy a bogen 5/8th spud withe the 1/4-20 female hole or the one with the thumbscrew, and attach that to the handle on the SS-c47

i happily discovered all of the bare 5/8 spuds at a visit to b&h last weekend!

you can make you own weird mounts with the standard 5/8th lighting spud
