CS4 and 24pA

I shot some 24pA footage and used a freshly installed CS4 suite to capture using the DV - 24P Widescreen 48kHz preset. At the time I hadn't updated it yet, so when I started my project, the clips in the project window would read 29.97 even though I shot in 24pA. I then read on another thread that this was something that CS4 did and that an update should solve the problem.

So I updated and now they all read 23.967. Great. But when I render a video using H.264 format, 23.976, Progressive field order, the video is extremely choppy. When I change it to Lower field order, it looks better, but I'm noticing some interlacing. With QT 23.967, progressive, I get this ghosting effect.

Before I updated I had rendered out some test videos with the same sequence and they looked about right.

I'm probably doing something wrong. What settings should I be using to export? Do I need to re-capture the footage, does the problem lie there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you wanna keep it progressive, dont choose lower or upper field, thats for interlace television. Keep it "P"

Second, you have to know you're destination format. Are you going for a 24P DVD, is this for the web, broadcast, etc.

For instance, when i use vegas, i remove the pulldown, edit and then upon ouput, i choose 24P DVD. Always maintain the frame rate when shooting, editing, outputting, burning etc.

Its not to say that you cant choose a different frame rate later, but if you wanna save yourself a headache, pick a frame rate and stick to it. Dont shoot progressive then output interlace.

Make sure you have the latest updates too. Check your settings in quicktime carefully upon export. Make sure field rendering is off when..well, rendering.

How does it look on the timeline? If you step through, frame-by-frame, does it all look OK? No interlacing or ghosting? Look carefully around moving objects.

If it looks OK, then you don't need to recapture. But if you created this sequence before you updated, you might try creating a whole new sequence and testing some renders from there.

I went back and did a full screen frame-by-frame, everything looks OK on the timeline except for the clips that I sped up. There is noticeable ghosting there, but when I play back its pretty crisp, and not like in the renders that do contain the ghosting.

As for creating a whole new sequence, I did just that but forgot to mention that I am getting the same results.

A new discovery is that I'm finding certain export settings using H264 format, progressive, 23.967, is rendering without chopiness, but not giving the desired 24P look, but more of a Video look. Which confuses me because I used the same exact settings before the upgrade and it was giving me the typical 24P effect. I compared it with a video I rendered of the same project before the upgrade.
