crude background patterns from a broad light?

Hi,
I'm wondering if any of you have experience using basic broad/nook lights as a means for projecting breakups. I'm wondering if I could use these relatively inexpensive and low profile lights to do some basic background breakups, freeing up better lights for more delicate things.
The lights I have in mind have barn doors and I wonder if black wrap with holes or slits might work.

I'm right with you..had great luck with ellipsoids in a studio setting. But trying to make things portable. I can get what I need generally from a fresnel and some black wrap..just wondering if a broad light that folds down compactly would work well enough.

Both options will do what you need. A Source 4 gives you a lot more control in shaping the light and comes with a filter holder, but a Nook Light is definitely more compact. You can make the Nook Light work with creative placement and use of the barn doors.

I'm not kidding myself into the idea of a convincing concise window pattern..just that kind of random cucoloris kind of breakup..without the expense and lugging of a larger light. I often find myself in bland little bare walled rooms that wouldn't have the space/distance for a typical ellipsoid either. A nook light might even work where there's only room for clamping. In my mind, a broad nook light, some hole ridden black wrap and maybe a dimmer. Could be pulled into use as a wash for a green screen or bounce.
Thanks

I have used a mole nooklite in that role many times. Add a Harbor Freight router controller for a dimmer, and gel with black wrap or foamcore cookie and you are golden.

All the Best!

Dave
