CRT viewfinder on 5D

I agree. I picked up a DXF viewfinder just to try this out. I was thinking about going with a breakout box type of solution but I haven't found much info yet.

I wonder how long it will take Canon to realize that they have all the parts in house to sell an EVF for the 5DM2 and 7D? Come on Canon!

I have an old DFX-3000 lying around - looks like the same connector... Any opinion on whether or not it'll work?

Also, I'm drawing a blank - the typical AV mini connector is TRRS, right? Which connections are video on it?

i wonder if you can keep the lcd off while you look in you VF...if so you would be able to save LOTS AND LOTS of battery life...I know with the View finders they have out now you are still burning LCD battery time.

yup, when the av cable is plugged in it disables the onboard LCD, or at least that's the case with the t2i

Or, you could do something like this:

Custom rig that rents from DC-Camera here in Virginia.

Ya know.......

If ya enclosed that frame, it would add a little more weight to help keep the camera more stable.....

That has got to be the most stupid use of new technology yet. Talk about re-inventing the wheel...

Hi, Chris. How do you connect the viewfinder to camera? I try the ipod headphone but got lost... Thanks for your help.

I'm not clear in my question, i'm refering to the av cable you use to connect. I finally figured it to be the yellow jack and my finder is working now, but i have two extra jacks...how to make the cable cleaner?

Huh!

Having seen the forehead-slapping obviousness of the concept... I really wonder why no one's come out with something like this for a product already.

All it'd have to be is a tiny 2" monitor with a magnifier loupe on it with an HDMI or composite input, powered by a 9V battery or AA or something. You could mount something like that on a shoe or a short Noga arm and have even more flexibility in terms of camera / VF placement.

If someone made something like that with a decent (480P or so) resolution, I'd totally pay $400 for it. But I suppose it's cheaper to make a loupe that attaches to a pre-existing LCD and sell it for $400 as opposed to making an LCD of your own and attaching a loupe to it. So from a manufacturer standpoint, I guess Z-finder style makes more sense....

I'm not sure if a lo-res viewfinder would be good enough for precise focusing though. I've read people complaining about the Pana HPX500 viewfinder being hard to focus and that one is such a lo-res viewfinder.
That's probably the reason why there is no product there yet and a hi-def viewfinder with reasonable quality could easily cost as much as a 5D.

Anyone tried this lately? I'm thinking this could be very useful for my purposes. It seems like building a power supply and composite input box would be fun.

Found a couple options. Anyone know where I can find the female connector for a Sony BVP viewfinder? Or even just the pinout.
