Croped Too Tight

I shot a live performance and cropped a little to tight on the sides. I have the image on the tape but when I put it out to DVD and play on TV I have problems losing the extreme edges that I want shown. I have been using Imovie because it's so easy to use. I have Final Cut Comming and am wondering if there is a fix for this in FCP. It would be better to have a little black on the sides on some tvs than to lose the performers.

I don't know about the capabilities of iMovie - but you should be able to simply reduce the image size a bit. You will of course get black bars on the sides on some TV's.

Learn about Safe Action / Safe Title Area before your next shoot.

Your problem, besides the original framing of course, is underscan. Most TV's do not show the full frame and crop top, bottom and both sides, that is the reason for the TV safe guides in viewfinders and NLEs. I don't know iMovie, but in FCP, you can view the TV safe area and scale the image until it fits inside the lines. Some TVs and monitors will show black bars surrounding the image. Oh well, live and learn. If you have burnt a DVD of the project, you should be able to see the full frame if you play the DVD in the Apple DVD player on your Mac.

Thanks Sirus,

I found a plug in for Imovie that did the trick but unfortunately it caused other problems. I now have a lot of weird pixelization on the pans and when the dancers move rapidly, which dancers ofcourse will do.
