I think this set of Angenieux T2.9 cine zooms are about perfect for me in terms of focal length (at FF).

21-56 would be excellent most of the time. Often proper wide (21 usually enough) is THE shot to put a subject in context - a lawyer surrounded by books, a mechanic working in a garage. It’s also wide enough for filming in a car. Subject in context is obviously crucial for doc. Plus it’s a nice walking around focal length without too much camera shake. Then the typical unexpected emergency involves the subject starting to talk about a key theme of the video and I want to pull all attention onto them with no time to change lenses. In this case, 56 allows a decent, conservative medium close up from a few feet away.

The other lens in the pair is 37-102. Great for interviews. 102 is nice for close ups with subject isolation, 37 for a standard wide or even a two shot.

it’s just a shame they are 50,000 USD each and weigh 2.6kg!

If Sony could come up with equivalents at a tenth the price and half the weight (with OSS, god I’m boring) I’d be in there. In-camera correction of vastly simpler and inferior lens mechanics not a problem.

Peter,
I recently picked up the Sigma 28-70 dg dn and have been shooting events with it. It is so light and of good quality. I also have the Sony 20 f1.8 which I picked up used and use them together sometimes when I need to go a bit wider at times.

I ended up getting the 24-70. I don’t enjoy the weight. Eventually I’d like to get the 28-70 to round out my kit. The 20mm sounds like a nice lens for gimbal work.
