FS7: Crop mode (centre scan)

I'd genuinely say as of right now - and speaking as an extension unit/7Q owner - raw on the FS7 is a dead end and is not as good quality as the internal XVAC-I recording.

Something would have to fundamentally change from Sony about their interpretation of raw for the FS7 to make it usable.

I'd say forget about it. The fact that their raw isn't all that raw anyway - as in the WB is baked in and not adjusted via metadata - means you're just better off with an improved pro ress or xvac capability.

In my opinion raw is hardly needed when you have the excellent XAVC files and so many stops of DR as the FS7 have. I've corrected the most ugly whitebalance issues to perfection with FS7 footage due to bad light sources and there's actually some room to save some blown highlights. Sure raw is better but internal XAVC is good enough.

Raw in the sense of Arri raw or Red raw is better definitely. But Sony Raw and the FS Raw as found on external non Sony recorders? XVAC is much better to work with than that. Sony raw files absolutely fall apart when you have anything even vaguely resembling a shadow.

This might be true for the FS7 until Convergent sorts out this mess, but I can say that on the FS700 +7Q, the RAW is very good as I used it all the time. Convergent just needs to get the settings right.

So there is hope for RAW on the FS7 if CD does it the right way.

Definitely coming.
I heard it from Juan- the champ of the FS7-at the NAB. He knows how important it is...

Does he also know how important it is to fix the bugs we've all been banging on about since November?? I'd want Sony to fix the the LUTs and the shutter bug before spending time on anything else.

Absolutely. This is the first week I have someone else using my FS7 and the amount of 'oh yeah one more weird thing it might do' conversations I have had to have is ridiculous.

That's a shame to hear Ben. So, for you, the only reason to get the extension unit is for Prores, 240 fps or to use bigger, more expensive batteries that you can't take on planes without dancing the light fandango with security?

Timecode, genlock and v-mount plus internal pro res is quite good I suppose. And it certainly aids the balance of the camera when on the shoulder. Not checked the new 240fps pro res on the 7Q but in raw the shadows were so screwed that I won't use it again.

All things considered if I knew everything I know now when I made all my purchases I would not have spent about £4,500 in total on an external recorder and the extension unit.

EDIT: I agree, it's a great camera. It doesn't need new features. It needs the spec it was advertised with to work like they should.

Haha ya I am playing show and tell with a client friend who is looking to purchase an FS7 and going over my head all of the 'gotchas' It seems like an unappealing sell job. I love the camera and the images that it produces but until Sony fixes the quirks I bet a lot of renters might have odd experiences with this camera which is unfortunate because it is a great camera. Definitely an owners camera.

Liam & Frame Farm...spot on.
This is the only camera I've ever used where I find myself checking the shutter angle /speed as often as I do the exposure.
