FS7: Crop mode (centre scan)

Is center scan on the f5/55 an instant button push thing or a go into the menu and reboot kind of thing?

It's either a:

- dig into the menu and press a bunch of buttons things (but no reboot)

or

- two-button-press All File thing, that's nice and easy but requires a full reboot.

Which is why we all keep begging for a firmware update to give us centre-crop on one of the assignable buttons.

The difference between a WOW! And a hmmm...

These two messages just described Sony to a T for me. We know that *somehow* it's just not going to be done in a sensible, elegant way. I feel like Icarus' sentiment is basically how I felt upon getting and actually using the FS7. Don't get me wrong, it obviously has the specs they advertised but damnit if it doesn't have a truckload of gotchas.

It's like WOW an adjustable handle- I need a drew driver- hmmm
look WOW it's an EVF- with some 3rd party locks and loupes I can make it work- hmm
look Wow a crop mode it's like a little faster than switching a lens- hmm

I can make the switch between modes in less than 10 seconds on my F55 and so can anyone else who wants to setup their User Menu to allow it. Would a single push button be better? Yes, but it's not as bad as it is being made out to be. Don't forget that this is a feature that was never even mentioned by Sony until yesterday so it is a FREE bonus for anyone who already has the camera. Lighten up and be happy for what you're getting. Jeez.

This instant mode change is what I was saying would be wonderful a couple pages ago but doubted would be possible.

Man, we're getting so much for $8,000 - I definitely won't complain. I remember paying nearly $6000 for a Letus Ultimate DOF adapter to put on an $8000 EX-1 package. There's just no comparison. We live in a magical time, and it's better to be grateful and amazed and humbled than to complain about what we still don't have.

Just imagine, in ten years or less, you probably can own an older Alexa for $5k or so.

Off course it's "nice" to have but but 10 sec is way too long for what such a functionality would be really be usefull for in most situations in real life. Let it reboot if that's the only way but put it on speed dial

I'm certainly not complaining about getting extra features, but it's OK to poke at Sony for sort of half-assing a lot of their features. New camera has waveform! Well, it kind of works sometimes, it might be grayed out on your camera. It disappears with a LUT. Oh yeah, the new camera has LUTs! Well, only if you're in Cine mode. And I hope you didn't want to use that Waveform I just told you about.

I thought this thread was about center crop? If you just want to ***** about every other issue you have with Sony, there are many other threads for that, aren't there?

So back to crop- if I take a say zeiss 11-110 S16 zoom and PL it to the fs7- do I get an effectively -16mm -1080p camera with all funktionaljties intact - 4k no loss of lowlight etc?

Great to get - but sony seem not really to understand (and Doug?!) 10 seconds is an age - it is in Run-Gun situations

Maybe Doug think about owning 2/3 zoom lens that took 10 seconds to move to the long end, or kind of stopped for 10 seconds half way through the zoom!

Of course it is still super useful both in lensing options and also just getting long with a 70-200 or whatever.

Ive been shooting b unit of a boat today - most of the time the a camera in a rib was in the way - generally it popped out of shot for maybe 10 seconds - no time at all for an menu business.

Today I was actually shooting narrative fiction but the cost of boats/talent complexity of tide et al.. meant that fast fast opping was still to the fore!

yes but it's a R&G camera.

Its as much of a R&G camera as it is a Cinema camera. Compromise on both ends of the spectrum but covers so much of the middle ground.

I'm glad Sony keeps adding features. Even if they could be better I'd rather they ad these features then not offer them at all like other manufacturers. I'm really looking forward to Center crop so I can save on owning really Long zooms which are very neiche to me. In these situations a 10 sec re-boot won't be a factor. If that 10sec matters you could always shoot your content in 4K and then punch in during post to get a similar shot for HD delivery and if going from wide to zoom fast and hold focus then you might be better off using a 2/3" ENG cam.

I would prefer it did everything it was supposed to properly first but this seems like a nice feature for those that need it.
