Crop Factor when Using HDMI Recorder?

I ran into something I don't understand, so please enlighten me!

I was doing some tests recording the following to compare:

5Dmk2 - ML + Remove Overlays -> Internal Codec
5Dmk2 - ML + Remove Overlays -> Ninja2 Recorder

If you look at the bottom of the alcohol bottle you can see the difference in viewing angle. I had a 20mm f1.8 lens on there.

Is it possible that I'm getting more of the viewing angle of the lens when doing this? How is this possible?

The first image is 16:9 (video aspect ratio), the second one is 3:2 (stills aspect ratio) with black bars on the sides. You want to force the camera to output 16:9 through HDMI.
