Hi guys, I really need youre help

Im shooting a commercial tomorrow and I am trying to setup my hvx200 and firestore-100 (rented). Cannot get any commuication. I tried to follow a guide on dvshortfilms.com, I tried the firestore manual and breif search on forums. No progress.

Thanks!

Let us know the HVX menu settings for menu 5 ('Recording Setup') and menu 9 (other functions)

If we can confirm the camera is setup properly first, then we can move on to the Firestore and take it one piece at a time.

Thank you so much, im getting really stressed here in Norway :)

Nothing is jumping out at me as being obviously wrong in your menu settings.
So it seems everything is set up correctly.

What happens when you hit record?
Does it do anything, change at all... give you a new message...etc?

(I'm digging around for my FS100 manual right now, want to look up that 'E Stop' message you're getting)

The other possibility is that your cable might be bad - but if that were the case I would expect to see a 1394 disconnect error... which you aren't getting anymore.

I realized after I posted that that it was 2 different things....
I finally got my FS100 out and turned it on...and I saw the LCD.

It shows the square (meaning it's stopped),
then it says "E" (which means its set to tapeless recording)
Then it says "STOP" ... because, its stopped.

So far everything looks normal to me.
So tell me, what happens when you hit record on the HVX?

you are right, the E stop is probably not an error

Only now, is says C, instead of E. I am constantly changing settings, so I might have triggered a letter change somehow.

When I press record, absolutely nothing changes or happens. No timecode rolling oncam or in firestore. The p2 icon is blinking constantly red incam (as it should) and i394 is lit up incam.

The previous 1394 disconnect error did light up upon pushing rec, but now it doesnt.

I really have no clue and I am leaning towards shooting on HDV tomorrow, sadly. This should be easy, right?

Thanks for helping, and please continue if you have any more suggestions

Regards
Haavar

EDIT: Ive tried 3 different cables...

Well, the timecode never rolls on the camera.

Something just occurred to me.
Go to your 'OTHER FUNCTIONS' Menu on the HVX, and change '1394 Control' to 'EXT'
instead of 'BOTH'

You mentioned the P2 icon in blinking...which means you don't have a p2 card in the camera. I'm not certain if it matters, but perhaps when set to 'BOTH' the camera won't trigger the recording if it doesn't have a P2 card in it. But if you set 1394 to EXT then it won't matter if you have a P2 card or not.

FORGET THAT IDEA -

Just tested it out with my FS100.
It doesn't matter if there is a P2 card in the camera or not - when set to 1394 control is set to BOTH it will start the FS100 recording with or without a P2 card in the camera.

hmmmm

yes, and I think we are on to something

When this is (EXT) selected, I am getting the 1394 Disconnect error again. When the cam thinks I am also using the internal mode, is does not give me an error from the external drive, but it does when set to EXT only...right?

So, this leaves me with a faulty drive? I have tried reset to factory settings once on the fS100, should I do this on the HVX200 also, it seems so radical (with the little recressed button and all)

Thanks again!

Under "REEL" in the firestore, it is set to NONE, with no possibility to change it. Can this be the cause?

Hm.
I have no idea.
but I can tell you my FS100 has a list of R0 through R9 in the menu, and I can choose any one of them. I doubt this would be the issue, seeing as mine is selected to 'NONE' anyhow....

Have you tried recording from the FS100 instead of doing a tapeless setup?
Just out of curiosity you might want to try it....

That way at least you'll know the FS100 is hooked up correctly, and the cam can successfully send the footage, etc... and that would narrow the problem down to just the 'triggering' of the REC from camera to drive.

Yes, I have tried several times. Pushing rec makes the rec symbol appear and REC is showing. But no TC is running...is this because of the TC settings on the FS (but it should make its own, not get it from the HVX, right?)

Nothing happens in VCR mode, and nothing happens when I push play, forward skip.

There are some more TC and 1394 settings in the VCR recording setup menu, but these should only refer to the VCR part and are of no interest to the CAM setup, right?

This is looking pretty bad, but thanks for helping out!

EDIT: Thats, NO TC is running...on the FS that is

Hmmm.
Well, here is a really silly question - but I feel I have to ask - are you certain you have the Firewire cable plugged into the proper port on the FS100? It should be plugged into the 'DV I/O' port (NOT the Computer I/O port).

The other thing that becomes questionable is the firewire port itself, either on the FS100 or on the HVX. Do you use the FireWire port on your HVX to connect the cam to your computer or anything else? Are you certain its working?

Well - it seems clear that for whatever reason the HVX is not communicating with the FS100.

The drive can clearly record, because it goes into REC mode when you hit the record button on the drive (no TC runs on it bc there is no signal coming into it, which is normal as I double checked that on my unit).

The HVX has no problem with its FireWire connection because you have connected it to your Mac wihtout a problem.

The HVX when set to "1394 EXT" give you a 1394 disconnect error when connected to the FS100, and you've tried 3 different cables.

So honestly...I'm out of ideas.

Unless something really weird is going on - like having an NTSC Firestore on a PAL camera (which I seriously doubt)....

wow, thanks for all the input, and I am pretty confident its a faulty drive
This sucks, and its back to even more crappy HDV..

Thanks for all the help, and still if any oracle have input...

Thanks
