Creating diffusion look in FCP?

Hi guys,
I'm not too saavy with the FCP special effects and thought I'd ask one of you experts for some advice.

I have a scene in my flik that is a flashback and want to create a feeling like we're looking at someone's memory. I don't want to go the "black and white" route. It's done so many times. What I'm looking to do is make the actors feel like they're glowing and blurry. But not so blurry we have a hard time looking at them. Just diffused a bit. Also, was considering adding a film grain to the scene as well.

Can someone tell me how to do it without third party plugins?

Also, if you want to see the scene I'm talking about, go to my website in the short films section to see the teaser I posted. The dialogue scene in the park is one of them.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Creating diffusion look in FCP?

Duplicate your video layer. Add gaussian blur to the top layer. Change layer mode to screen. Control opacity. That will give you some diffusion. For the glow, run through AE. There's a decent glow filter included.

Thanks Taubkin. Thing is, I don't have AE. Was trying to just do the glow using FCP. Is that possible? And how about the film grain?

Re: Creating diffusion look in FCP?

The technique taubkin describes will give your video a soft-focus look to it, which some may say looks "glowing". Try what he describes, and play around with it, you might like what you end up with just fine :)

Re: Creating diffusion look in FCP?

There can be other ways of getting glow effects playing with layers and transfer modes, but if you need flashy, you'll have to go the plugin route. I personally dislike flashy effects and a change in color balance/contrast/sofness is all I need to create a dreamy atmosphere.

Play with th transfer modes. There is a lot of possibilities with them.

Check out a Eureka! video filter in their #4 package that is called Silk Stocking. It works great for brightening the highlights and softening up the whole image. Great for wedding videos.

The filters are very good. Not all are useful in every situation but others I use all the time.
