Creating a movie poster

Hey,

I'm shooting a feature on my Panasonic DVX100. I am shooting 24p of course and want to make a poster out of screen grabs from the film. What is the best way?

Should I master to HD? How do I do this?

unfortunately, you don't have nearly enough resolution in that screen grab to blow-up into a full size poster. at a minimum, a theatrical poster should be 27"x40" at 150dpi. ideally the resolution should be 300dpi.

so, in my opinion, the best thing to do would be to re-create the shot and shoot some high-res stills of it.
 
But that is assuming the shot would take up the whole poster, right?

You could do cells in a film strip, (or something more original) or you could take elements maybe from the DVX shots and composit them in.

Download a demo of photozoom pro (I think that's what it's called) and try uprezzing with that.
 
You will always want to take high resolution stills anyway during a shoot of behins the scenes and of the scene for PR and marketing purposes. Some of those could be used for poster design if needed.

Keep in mind that depending on the final poster size, you may still be pushing the limits of "acceptable" photo quality if using an inexpensive digital still camera.

You can find charts online that'll tell you what kind of capture resolution you'll require for your desired print size.

Bottom line is, just as everyone else has mentioned - you'll need some dedicated photos from a still camera to use for your poster. However, captured stills from your film footage should be acceptable for online viewing.
 
Nice posting Prodigi - havent seen such good discussion as to the art of movie posters! Good tip on those low volume printers too, I just may be using them soon. Thanks!

Yeah I have made some this long, but I can only do it a couple of times a month. Prod P wins for prolificness hands down :)

Haha. Just a "color commentary" on the length. Definitely not intended as a knock by any means though.

But I did mean to commend you on the content which is great and did not mean to imply that there is fluff or waisted verbiage. Very useful detailed stuff.
