Create a vob

I burned a master dvd that will be replicated. However, they're in China (replication company), and they need a vob file of the dvd. I have no idea what this even means. I tried googling this, but it came up with a lot of "converters" and I'm done downloading stupid converters that don't work. Does anyone have experience in this? What do you use?

When you "author" a DVD, the raw mpeg2 files are converted to vobs (video objects), metadata for chapter points is added, and a file and folder structure is built around them. A Vob can only be 2GB, so the main feature of a DVD is often split into 3 or 4 vobs.

It seems an odd request. What I would suggest is that you find a DVD authoring package and select "write to hard disk" rather than write to DVD. That will create the vobs and associated structure on your hard drive - ship that to them?

Would an ISO of the disc suffice? If you author your DVD to an ISO on your computer instead of burning to disc this should have inside it the correct VOB files and structure, right? And then you can just ftp them the ISO image.

Good call. I'll push for that as well. This vob thing seems like more trouble than it should be. Is it common for people to use these?

The usual thing would be a disk image. On a PC that's an ISO, and I assume on a Mac it's a DMG. Maybe they are PC-based and simply unfamiliar with dmg's?

You can make a .iso of an DVD on a Mac using Disk Utility.

I think that you need to find a different DVD replicator. There are several based in the US with very low pricing. Unless your chinese vendor is practically free, it's probably not worth the extra effort & communication problems that you're already starting to have. Just type "dvd replication" into google & start there.

Well call me dense, but every DVD I've ever seen already has VOB files created there in the video_ts folder. If you created a master dvd then you already have these files sitting there. Did you look on the disc?
