Crazy story / DVX100 repair. My Firewire port is broken.

Hello.
My DVX100 (original version) needs to be repaired and i was wondering where i can send it to get fixed?

The only problem is the Firewire port does not work anymore. I am wondering if you think Maybe i can get that replaced with out having to spend money on replacing a lot of the other internal parts?

What happened was a crazy thing that we still don't understand how it happened;
The DVX was plugged into a front panel firewire port on a computer case that was mysteriously frying any camera that plugged into it. 4 cameras total were damaged by 2 different people before anyone realized the front pannel firewire on our Cosmos Case was doing this. ( This was a new computer case with its own fire wire port) The new case was a replacement for an older case that also had its own firewire port with the same motherboard, but functioned properly without damaging any cameras.

The cameras were shutting off when plugged in. Some of the cameras will not come back on at all, while others will work but the firewire no longer works.

We realized that unplugging the front panel fire wire header to the motherboard made the fire wire in the back function properly and no cameras were damaged any more. I believe that this case is to blame as everything was installed properly. I wonder if i can sue the case manufacturer and get them to pay for the repairs.

So far we have 2 XHA1s, a DVX100, a canon HV10 damaged by this case's firewire.
I am the computer builder, but not the operator.

Here is a picture.

Here is a picture.

Found out that the motherboard has a 9 pin firewire connector, while the case has a 6 pin firewire front panel header cable block.
Even though they phiscally will go together, the internal wires, that supply power and data were routed backwards when connected...
Thus the cameras were fried...

I just assumed that if it would connect then thats the way it must go, and the extra 3 pins were for something else. I'm surprised to learn this lesson. -That even though a cable can be connected, dosnt mean its not still backwards.

Here is a picture of my (improperly connected firewire header).

So what this means is that, you if you have a case with a firewire header block with 6 pins and your motherboard has 9 pin conector for firewire then your out of luck. You cant use it. Seems like they would have warned me in the manual of this. Seems like i wouldn't be the first person to have this happen.

Just a week ago I fried my canon mvx35i that Im using as a deck in the same way...very sad!
Anyway I thank God it wasnt my dvx...hopefully Im not using it for capturing...!
Some nice people told me that I should use that little device http://www.kramerelectronics.com/indexes/item.asp?name=PT-1FW when Im pluging my cam to the firewire port of my PC and I can feel safe...
I think you can find it even at B&H...search for it...
I know it wont save you the money for repair, mine neither, but at least it ll protect us for the future...
Good luck:thumbsup:

I wonder if it really works.

I am having a simular problem with my DVX100b, I don't think it's putting out a digital siginal because when connected by fire wire to my computer my PC does not dectect the camera. Any suggestions?

Try using a different firewire cable first, because flaky cables are a common problem (for a lot of computer related issues) that is an easy fix. If that doesn't work, you need to test with another camcorder on your computer, or try your camcorder on another computer (preferably one known to work with other cameras).
