Crazy idea for 2 perf like mod

What if you modified the gate on a 4 perf camra like a KONVAS 1M to 18.6H X 10.5W so you would be shooting a horizontal rectangle and then Flip the camera 180 degrees. So it would be 10.5mm high X 18.6 wide. When you are finished with one side of the roll then you just expose the other side like an old 8mm camera.

You would also need to to re-center the mount, and figure out a new tri-pod mount.

No need to mod the gears to get 2 perf movement, but this would only work with something like a Konvas or a Eyemo. It would be way too unwiledly to shoot with a large camera this way.

Would something like this work?

Its been a long time... but there was a place down under that was adapting cameras to shoot 2 perf....

They have some stuff on ebay right now.
arri 2c starting bid at US $2,100.00 and a nice looking Kinor 35H for 5K.

I want to give this a try with a Eyemo as it is so small, only a 100ft load and loud as hell. At the same time you can get a konvas 1M package with lenses and some mags for around $500. I just need to read up on the pin registration on the konvas to make sure it works with modern film.

The other issue is getting a diy
telecine put together for this. I doubt any commercial facility would want to deal with this.

Yup. And this is why I advise modifying the camera to handle 2-perf rather than this work around. If you mod the camera to do standard 2-perf, life becomes much easier.

The real reason to do what you're suggesting is, you just want to. And if that's the case, have at it. That's how artists make great art. And fill up some trash cans with the early attempts. Life is short -- go for it!

Absolutely, this and a ultra 16 camera would be a good combo for me. I cant afford a DI but the prices for parts to make a workable telecine have come way down. This would be a fun project to tackle next year. We will see if I get enough courage to just go for it.

Bernie Odoherty of Super16 Inc. is doing Ultra 16 mods.
Bruce at Aranda in Australia did a handful of 2 perf mods. Anders Bank in (???sweden???) handled 2 perf Kinor conversions with techs in St. Petersburg- pretty sure that's history.
There was a guy in England doing Arri BL4 2 perf conversions. Can't remember his name.

Not Les- he wasn't doing 2 perf conversions.
Alex Georgirou??? Shaking cobwebs in the (empty) caverns Barry...

If you're really going down such a route (You fight those tides! Maybe outfit your car with wagon wheels too!), I would suggest building or at least buying your own film scanner as well. No point in optical printing, but you can get a BMD film scanner and then create a program to split the two frame halves and re-order the files.

Make sure that any camera you do this to is pin-registered. You're going to be greatly magnifying the image-weave at the gate.

A DIY film scanner is something that I have wanted to tackle for a while. I have been DSLR scanning my 135 stills for a while and plan to clobber something together with a stepper and some modified code and hardware from the miniEngine timelapse project. It will be crazy slow but am not going to do any thing serious with this, I do all my developing at home so I can only do 100ft at a time.

I just ordered a KONVAS 1M cost me $190 shipping included. It comes with the slightly less ancient 25M-8M motor drive but I am sure its going to have a ton of issues. I will do a teardown when it gets over here.
