FS5: Crash Course on SLog for FS5?

I rented this to shoot some super slow-mo next week (and test it out otherwise) and really, really need a hand with dealing with SLog2/3 (or even deciding if it's worth it). I'll be shooting to 1080p24 50MBps (this is 4:2:2, correct?) and editing in Premiere

Aside from exposing dead on or a bit to the right, what is a quick and dirty LUT to bring this footage to life? This would be my first time working with raw on any substantial project, so pointers to articles or SOPs would be swell. Thanks

I was under the impression the FS5 does not currently shoot raw, though it is rumored
to be in a possible firmware update.

Are you shooting raw or log?

I just shoot SLOG3 internal in 422 10bit HD, I really can't see any use for SLOG in the UHD 8bit... no RAW yet, Sony says its planing on offering it as a firmware upgrade and then you just need a compatible recorder

I attended a seminar with Alister this week in Minneapolis. He devoted about 3 hours to S-Log workflow. It was pretty amazing. The gist of it (for the FS5) was when in 10-bit HD, shoot either S-Log2 or S-Log3, and when in 8-bit 4K, mix S-Log2 Gamma and S-Gamut3.cine color.

He also discussed the CineEI functionality in the FS7 and higher end cameras, in where you expose 1.5 to 2 stops over and then use a LUT to give you a usable 709 monitoring image. A quick and dirty way to do this with the FS5 (which does not have the built-in CineEI function) is to use a monitor that can display LUTs, and then make a number of calibrated LUTs at 1 and 2 stops over to apply and give you proper correction when shooting. The tool he used was LUTCalc - I think it's $3 on the App Store or has a web app as well.

LUTs you can download from Sony's website (quite difficult to find) or I have this directory where you can get them as well.

Be aware however to date Sony has only released two distinct set of LUTs; one for old s-gamut color science and one for s-gamut3.cine. On top of that Sony tied slog2 to the older s-gamut color science and slog3 to the newer s-gamut3.cine color science.

You can also use LUT Calc (a tool built by Ben Turley) to create these LUTs for you which can be interesting to play with and can be used to make specific changes to the LUTs.

About articles, this one I wrote on Sony gammas would be applicable to the FS5:

After much reading and LUT testing, I'm pretty darned impressed by the simple built-in Lumetri coloring available in Premiere. Not so crazy about their built-in SLog3 LUT, but a slightly contrast-modified version of their Alexa or BMC ProRes LUTs look awfully good... Jarle's Presets 3.0 also has a good solution, although I'll likely use the Lumetri tools on this final product.

Shooting SSQ 240 at 1080-50MBps outdoors, results are better than expected for internal recording
