crappy tapes in an fx1/z1u

has anyone had the pleasure of using crappy tapes in these cameras? how bad is the framedrop?

Well, the thing is, when you get hit with one it's nasty -- it's a 15-frame lockup, so a half of a second goes by where the screen is frozen. The question is how frequently will that happen -- and with cheapo and/or re-used tape, the odds go up.

I wouldn't do it. If I was running HDV I'd use only the very, very best tape I could find. And, ideally, a FireStore or HDV Rack running simultaneously as a backup.

thats what ive been using, and it's worked perfectly. I asked because i recently got hired to shoot for someone on the z1u, and they are looking for ways to cut costs. of course.

Yeah, no better place to cut costs than on the actual tape that's recording the footage, that's for sure. Wisdom there. Real wisdom. After all, you put $6,000 of camera, a $50,000 rented grip & light truck, a crew of 20 people costing you $400to $1000/day each, and you try to save $3 on the tape THAT'S RECORDING IT ALL?

Oops -- looks like I dripped sarcasm all over the place. Sorry.

But, um, no -- cheaping out on tape, on HDV, is just about the worst possible mistake you can make.

Snakes on a plane, man. Snakes. On a plane.

ARRRRR, whats this "Snakes on a plane" mean , I leave DVXuser.com for a couple of days and like everyone is saying it , maybe I should start saying aswell....

Wow, suddendly I feel a whole lot cooler

Snakes on a plane man, snakes on a plane
