Craigslist Morons ISO Famous Director

You: Oscar or Emmy winning director with deep experience and access to top notch DOP. Must have willingness to drop everything on short notice, work for nothing and rewrite our shitty short film script.

Us: Talentless morons without a clue or the ability to write anything approaching a useable short film script. No track record and no sense of reality.

Objective: Let's make a film that will get us some recognition--baby!

Looking for someone to direct our short film. It's a great script, and we want to submit it to some festivals, which could get us some recognition. Therefore we are looking for a director that brings not only a creative style, but has significant experience, that is, at least 10 years directing projects and preferably some awards (an Emmy or an Oscar would go a long way). Oh and we'd also like you to help re-write the script, and bring us an experienced DP as well.

Looking to start pre-production by the end of the month, and shoot in November, so this would require about a four week commitment from you.

No pay.

people post those all the time. there should be a $$$ requirement to post in the gigs section, cos all that crap belongs in the volunteer section. a lot of people have brainfarts, think "omg a heroin-addicted clown named Mr Withdrawl would be a GREAT story! I'll just post on craigslist and see if I can get 20 or 30 people to sign up and help me make it!"

Quite sadly, you're correct. I see this stuff all the time and can only wonder. This one seems particularly deluded though. Good to know an Oscar will "go a long way" to establish credentials with these clowns.

So basically what happened is that you took out that Craig's List ad and then people started blasting it so you figured you would start to make fun of it so nobody would think that it may have been you.

I'm on to you Barry.

Ya know, the older I get the more I realize that is not true. There are some incredibly stupid people out there.

Sadly you're probably right.

I've met some people that are overabundant with stupidity in its most concentrated form.

I went in for an interview recently from a craigslist ad.. This guy was going to hire me as an editor for his film. During the meeting, he said he was going to put me to work, gave me a check for $100 and said the way he "gauges a good editor" is through a shot list. Basically he told me to write a shot list and that's how he'll know if I'm a good editor. So I'm thinking to myself, "this is weird but ok..." then I ask him how many pages/scenes. He tells me, "the entire movie."

Are you serious? So basically he wanted me to write him a shotlist for a movie HE is going to direct - all for $100.

So let me get this straight, you want to direct MY vision of YOUR movie?

Hahahaha..... why even be a director then? I swear, Craigslist has caused me a lot of trouble....

Gadzooks! Unmasked again. Please convey my message to Mr Tarantino--Despite your single Oscar, I'd like to consider bringing you on as a director for my short film--Ice Station Zebra: The Musical. It will take 36 months of your time and I can only offer you a tin of stale macadamia nuts, but I think the exposure will be good for your career.

I think we should all write mock e-mails to these guys and flood his account:

Dear Sir,

I have seen your ad on craigslist and I would like to say that I'm quite interested in you're project (despite the lack of information, or money). I'm a decorated director and have been in the business for many years, but am always glad to work for nothing. As asked, I have many awards, including an oscar. I will be happy to re-write your script.

We'll be in contact.

- Martin Scorsese

Nobody is that stupid.

I was that stupid once. This may sound a little arrogant, but I think it's important to show the other side of this coin, so the newbs are not completely discouraged from posting c/c/m gigs on Craigs.

Three years ago I posted on there, having zero experience and a script I wrote. I gathered a crew of 25 folks including post. I have a feature film finished and 6 distribution offers on the table as of two days ago. Finished it all for under 10K. No one was paid (yet). Gotta start somewhere. That film spring-boarded several other projects including a feature doc I just wrapped. I now write scripts for a living, have an agent and direct when I have the opportunity. Two features under my belt, a couple options and a sale I sign next week. I'm still poor (damn it), but if it wasn't for that c/c/m posting three years ago I wouldn't be living out my dream. I pay my bills and do what I love.

All because I was "stupid enough" to reach out for help three years ago on craigs list. Just a thought.

reaching out for help is one thing...asking an oscar award winning director to do your movie for a month with no pay is another...
