or in the very least, i'd restructure, re finance this into a SHORT film, shop it around and try to get a feature deal with it, which is the most common route for people without a lot of money.

Tom i think 9k might cover the crafty for a feature film for a crew of 15.
that 9k will only cover the food for the crew of 1.
ME.
and rethinking a bit, a 2 man crew can shoot a feature film for 9k in 5 days, Timur's done it
but add the rest of the post, and it is something to raise an eyebrow it. It's just insanity.
Hi all from our film community.
I am looking for a very experienced film dp and their crew for my upcoming film. It want it filmed on a canon D5. (the best film camera ever made in my opinion) the film will be shot mainly in LA with about a weeks worth of filming in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. This is a micro, micro, mini budget film so I am looking for an very experienced Dp to help me out. If you have the camera I want and your crew it will be A++++ for you.
Shooting late Dec early January for 3 weeks, so please send your resume to: Horst.
Thanx all.
- Location: LA/Palm Springs
- it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
- Compensation: Gas and $25/day stipend pay for DP only.
...So what are his choices? Choice A: don't make the project. Choice B: make outrageous requests like the ones we laugh about. End result of choice A: project does not get made - i.e., there is 0% chance of it ever existing. End result of choice B: project has >0% chance of existing, even if it's only 1%.
...people need to start forming filmmaking collectives, or clubs. Groups of people who get together to just shoot to shoot. Not a production company or pretend one. Drop the facade that you're going to make money at filmmaking, because you're not. Drop the facade that you're going to pay people on deferment, because you're not. Drop the facade that you're going to win any serious festivals or get picked up by a distributor, because you're not. Instead, just get together to shoot personal projects. To shoot what you like for the sake of shooting. To learn, grow, have fun.
When you see a craigslist ad... where they have nothing to offer, but act as though you'd be lucky to be any part of their project... that's EXACTLY what you're in for. A small group of dudes that think they're one quick film away from Sundance... and you better realize how lucky you are that they allowed you to bring your camera, lights, grip package, sound... and ALSO allowed you to shoot it so you could get a PA credit.
I'd like to do a blog... or maybe web-series... based on indi-production... because "the juice"... i.e. "street cred"... at THAT level... is based entirely on a facade of success, based on a string of other projects that didn't pay anything... and didn't turn out well... but are still riding on a decent [local] reputation that's been created, and sustained, by all the people who are too worried to ever tell it like it is... for fear they won't be asked to work on other zero-pay gigs that pop up.
Something like "The League" for an indi-production circle... is a great concept for a TV or web-series.
But Matt......you'd have to move out to So Cal. Everyone knows only things done out here become successful. Just look at all the production calls on CL Los Angeles. In STL everybody (but the REAL pros) wants everything for free. The funny thing is (as I'm sure you guys know) the "real" jobs actually pay decently... and of course the results are always great, or at least what the producers expected.

But if I were shooting the BTS of such a potential disaster... where I was free to use my own footage as I pleased? I'd show up and work on that project then... only if it was sure to be bad enough.
