Craig's List for DVXuser's

...Hey there, has anyone out there found a job on here, (CG) got paid, no hassle in the process, I came to the realization tonight, and after many many times looking over Craig's List Orlando, FL USA and Baltimore, MD that the whole fact anyone can post seems a bit scary and that the people looking for filmmakers aren't just using it as a big con, I have posted many times to job postings... luckily never being screwed over....have others out there been? Rant and rave if you feel like it! I hate craig's list and think its uneffective. I casted a movie and out of 40 responses from actors and actresses 1 showed up for an interview. If you can think of a reliable site for finding work or posting resumes other than craig's let us all know. Thanks for reading and offering your thoughts, in advance. PEACE!

I'm usually very careful with craigslist.

It tends to be the bottom of the barrel when it comes to jobs.

I've landed some good PA gigs in the past with it, but that was in Ohio, where good crew members are so scarce that Craigslist is actually a good way to find the scattered film makers with experience in non industry booming areas.

In LA, with crew members of plenty, craigslist seems to be for really low/no pay or very struggling productions. More or less a last resort, when rent or food is in order.

I'm sure there are good opportunities on craigslist, but it's like walking through a room of mouse traps to get the cheese.

Thats an interesting response, maybe it is good for certain rural communities/areas...Like you said in Ohio, I think for Orlando Florida not so much with Full Sail and the competition of jobs current or ex students are looking into, maybe just florida as a whole... Thanks for the quick response!
PEACE!

Back when I was in Indiana I got a great gig DP'ing a Canadian Reality-based show called Fanatical (fanatical.tv). The production company doing the show had recorded an episode in a small town in Indiana months before and had lost one of their tapes and needed someone to go back and do a quick 1-hour pickup shoot for $200. It had to be shot with a DVX to match the rest of the show and I was probably the first/only one to respond to it. I did the shoot, mailed them, got my check and all was good. Then one month later they contacted me out of the blue and were doing another episode in Indiana and hired me to DP the whole shoot. In 1.5 days I made more than I had in one month at my part-time job.

The downside of that is that it got my hopes up and I never got another legit job off of Craigslist in Indiana.

In one year in San Diego I have gotten one legit job from Craigslist and am currently doing work for the client, but other than that nothing legit.

yeah in LA you got to trudge through the garbage. i'm looking there these days, b/c i haven't worked in a while. when i first moved to LA i did some lo/no pay gigs which did land me some decent contacts, which in turn led to me getting hired on a show that i managed to stay on for 3 seasons. so i guess it's what you make of it. just keep your eye out for shady people, of which there are plenty.

I find Mandy.com to be better, although nto as many people know about it.

When I casted for a web series recently, we got a few people from craigslist, but we got our majority of people from Mandy.com. Although we found our DP by craigslist, great guy. He's been on the majority of our shooting days.

Craigslist is great for finding simple small intern jobs here in montreal, but when I want something paid... it ain't no good.

On the opposite spectrum, when I post looking for someone non-paid (hey, I'm a student film maker with 0 dollars in my bank account, give me a break!) it usually gets shut down, even in the non-paid section, by bitter people that want to find paid work. Let us post, we're not deceiving anyone and we say it's not paid right in the post, don't shut down our post just because you can't find paid work! Gah! Anyways...

Well, aside from you "poor students", there are a whole slew of scumbags that want you to have professional equipment and experience, bring lights and audio too, work 10 hours shooting their "Big project that will get you a lot of exposure" or their Wedding. all for $20 or less. I'm surprised they don't want you to lube and Simonize their car while you are there too.

Someone told me "he's gonna vulture you out till your left exhausted," Luckily when he said this a blessing showed up a true friend who saw through the middle man's psychic vampire nature to drain me empty, sounds bizarre but happened to me do this Thanks for your thoughts.

Did you find work?

Just for a day as an extra. It was fifty bucks cash and worked out well. I use CL to cast all the time.

Craigs is harder to get crew from. We normally shoot in the summer when school is out. We have several film schools here and many anxious students looking for credits and such.

You have to post that you're looking for students and that you're a student. "Student Project" is respected everywhere, LOL. I can't say I'm a student anymore but I usually have a lot of students on my projects.

Which makes it even tougher for us "poor students."

I got gig from a company in L.A. that needed an interview shot. It was only $500, but it was just a basic interview and I dropped the tapes overnight back to L.A. They were supposed to do the interview before the company moved to Colorado and that was cheaper than flying them back to L.A.

I did a short gig for Lifetime shooting a 5 minute interview, paid $120. Just shoot this guy, ask a few questions, then overnight the tape to California. This was a casting situation for one of those shows, and they wanted to see the guy and hear his story. I think I got that through either Mandy or ProductionHub.

Whenever I'm in the mood to be depressed about being a freelance editor in Los Angeles, I check out Craigslist. I've never once seen a decent paying job listed there.
I do know a couple of people who hooked up with women in personal ads, however...
