CPM Sidewinder Offset Rig

CPM Camera Rigs

DVXuser Sponsor
Now that the offset brackets are molded we moved forward with two additional tools in a desire to offer a conventional shoulder rig. One tool is a flip top cage that allows access to the camera and lens changes. This will be available in two sizes; the Small DSLR size and the medium for those that shoot with a battery grip (same as our shooter cages). The second new tool currently being built is a rod specific handle set. This allowed us to design the Sidewinder as a conventional camera-above-the-rods style rig, by putting the grips on the rods and off the cage.

I really like this design. We used the belly pan as our main attachment point so you can place the rig in its full shoulder configuration on a tripod head. But if you want you can remove the shoulder portion by turning only two knobs. We currently are thinking of offering two configurations, a basic rig for 450.00 and a more advanced unit that include the cage piece, top handle and counter weight kit. Both will ship with our heavy duty rods and our new QR plates as standard. Expect to have tooling for the two cages and front handles done in 2-3 weeks.

So now we have the two specific shoulder designs, the shooter for under slung camera configurations and the sidewinder for conventional should rigs. Currently in the design phase is a matte box and a basic follow focus unit. Both will require some decent tooling so it will be a while for those items.

Thanks,

Steve

The counter weight could be flipped around so it faces down, also played around a little the other day with one of our aviator rigs with the counter weight facing down and in the back bottom rods, with just a 1 pound weight. Made a world of difference.

Its completely up to the shooter how they want to configure it. It consists of individual round plates at 1 pound each. Overmolded in black rubber and able to be stacked, as many as needed.

Hi Steve

I want to get the DSLR Shooter Kit plus a couple of side handles so I can break it down into a more handheld friendly Aviator set up. However I am in the UK and at the moment my credit card is maxed out (lenses, lenses, and even more lenses). Is there any other way to pay, as in Paypal, for the product?

All the best and looking forward to purchasing one of your rigs.

Forgot to ask what the turnaround would be and postage to the UK once payment is received.

Hey Steve, is there any way to get pics of a 7d/5d mounted on this...for a visual of height clearance. I also want to see how those front handles are mounted on as well.

In my head, steve's silence means the sidewinder is almost ready...(fingers crossed)

Yup, basic rigs will begin shipping tomorow. The advanced rig a little later as that tool is still being finished.

To answer the size question, we have seen the benift of having different size cages with our full strut rigs. So we intened to continue that concept with the flip cages, but moved slightly up the scale by about a 1/2 inch. The current flip cage being tooled is right in between the small and medium cage units, 7.000 center to center (our current DSLR shooter struts are 6.500 center to center in height). Directly after this tool we have our wireless LCD monitor pieces to do and THEN the larger Flip cage will be at 9.000 center to center, and if you take one of each you get a third size :). So we should have everyone covered for camera style and grip option. Also people have asked about threaded inserts on the angled surface. Yes there will be two each, spaced to match our thin rails so those that want uber attachment points can run rod sets at 60mm spacing on the angle surface as well. You know who you are!

We are also working on an adjustable height piece to work between our belly pan and our quick release plate, hence the jump in height for some of our pieces.

We are also in talks to add our own branded articulating arms, ball mounts and hot shoe fixture to the site. Also the already mentioned Wireless Monitor will be added in the next week as will our pre-packaged Tekkeon battery kits.

Thanks,

Steve

Sidewinder rigs are now in stock and shipping. I also added some of the components that came out of the design of the sidewinder as specific items on the site. These include the rod mounted handles, the rod mounted handle kit (both handles with a 15mm cross bar) and the rod blocks. I also listed the wireless LCD Monitor and its components for advanced order. Tooling for the Flip cage is nearly done I hope to sample that in the coming week. Next mold to go into the tool room is the LCD pieces. We have been getting a lot of interest in the wireless monitor, so we are trying to expedite the tool.

Thanks,

Steve
