CPL filter use...

Hi all!

Quick question... I usually soot with a CPL on my lenses when outdoors in bright light. I can fit one on the DVX200 without any problem and still get the stock lens hood on. The "cap" opens and closes without any issues. BUT its total PITA to reach in there and adjust the CPL! Would be nice if Panasonic fitted a slot or something on side of the hood for access. I sometimes have to take the hood off, adjust, put back, and hope t didn't move. Anyone have any tricks for this short of getting a barn door matt box or something?

Thanks David! For some reason I totally forgot about those even though I have one fitted to my Canon!

In regards to the mattebox, those barndoors are called French Flags. The one on top is called either a Top Flag or an Eyebrow. The extensions from the Side Flags are sometimes called Wings. Barndoors is a term used to describe flags or cutters afixed to lights; generally made up of two or more leafs that turn in and out from the luminiere in a way that ressembles the big, hinged wooden doors of a barn.

Also, a mattebox with rotating stages is the best solution for what you're looking for in regards to motion picture use. But, the simplest solution of the rubber lens hood just eliminates so many problems brought with a mattebox and the extra weight and girth. It's such a great idea I would have never thought of it, myself! lol

Thanks Jason! I got to learn something new!

I might have to get one of those rubber collapsible china made cheapies off e-bay and try it. On my Canon, when shooting wide angle, the circular nature of the rubber hoods means the edges of it intrude into the shot and I sometimes forget to "collapse" them... It may not be a problem on the DVX, though (just doing a quick eyeball-test with a 65mm collapsible rubber hood off the Canon held in front of the DVX); I'll order one and post up the results!

Thanks David! I'm rather hard on lens hoods... I like the stock DVX hood because it's a great "front bumper" for the camera and really wish there was an easier way to adjust the CPL with it on. The rubber ones probably don't offer the same protection and no matter what, the rubber ones get tore up in my use so a bunch of disposable cheapies kinda works for me (going in and out of gear bags, narrow doorways, climbing rigging, etc.) Not that I'm clumsy, stuff happens! I think the local shop has one of those Mamiya hoods I'll go look at!

Bringing this thread back from the dead because I found a lens hood hack that works for me that I thought I'd share! I've been standardizing my screw in filters to 77mm to work on my big Canon glass, and have a pile of adapter rings to get them to work on everything else, including the DVX. Most recently I've been playing with a graduated ND filter (77mm) and been sticking it on my DVX with an adapter but of course the stock lens hood won't fit (same problem as a CPL filter). Soooo... for the heck of it I stuck my 77mm Canon hood on. It fit! It's a bit loose, but won't fall off and nothing a bit of gaffer tape can't fix. The 77 to 72 mm adapter ring pretty much locks it in place, and may be key to getting this to work, and there is no vignetting. Vello LHC-EW83J, about $17. Makes messing with a rotating filter so much easier since you can get a finger in between the tulip peddles!
