Covers on the side panel

I'm trying to use it with a varizoom and the way the panel rests once it is open is a bit off putting. Would be good to know if anyone has a work around.

Open all the way, the panel that protects those bits isn't in the way of anything. Only workaround is to remove the lid and...well that wouldn't be good. You'd have to get caps for everything.
 
I'll be honest I would prefer the caps for everything approach than the flapping in the wind that I have the moment.
 
Two options I'm considering:

Drill a hole in the flap where the Varizoom connector lines up.
Use a right angle connector to go into the camera to reduce the amount that the door sticks out when open.

I agree, it is a disconcerting problem.
