couple of questions before purchase..

Hi all.
I am looking into purchasing an F3 next week for an upcoming shoot in China - and selling my AF101. There are a couple of things I'd like to confirm though please. Will I still by able to capture footage to my ATOMOS Ninja through the HDMI port of the F3 ( Will this give me 10bit colour information?) and view the images on my TVLOGIC monitor through the HDSDI out. Will this workflow work?

In the back on my mind is what Canon may launch on November 3rd...wonder it if worth waiting until then..

Thanks!

The F3 will output 422 out HDMI @ 10-bit, and the Ninja will capture it quite well. Simultaneous HDMI and SDI output was fixed in firmware v1.1. If you buy your F3 now it will already have been updated.

As for Canon, do you have anything else invested with Canon that would make it matter? If you have a lot of EOS glass, it could be REAL interesting to see their body natively be compatible with EOS glass but who'm I kidding..

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Since I wrote the intial question I read many other similar posts on the forum, so apologies to all if I went over old ground here. I am delighted to say that I am picking up my new F3 next week and have a ten day shoot coming up in Shanghai. I'm really excited about shooting some great stuff out there. I already have 2 Carl Zeiss CP.2 lenses, and the Sony HD colour viewfinder (taken from my PDW-700) - so I should have a nice starting point to work from. I am also getting a shoulder rig (Movietube) which looks great and lets me power it with my v-lock batteries.

Can I just confirm that the output from the HDMI socket is 10 bit and not 8 bit. There seems to be a little confusion here. If it is, that's great news as I can keep using my Ninja which I think is a great piece of kit. You say the 'ninja will capture it quite well' - but is should capture it as good as any other device?
Thanks again, Sparky!

Thanks Ned. I won't get the Samurai in time before I head out as its release date is a couple of weeks away here in the UK, but I imagine getting footage from the HDMI to my Ninja, even though it will be 8bit, will still be a higher grade than from the internal cards as I will record at a bit-rate pf 100mbps, still at 422. I hear the images the F3 produces off the internal cards are awesome as well?
JD - That looks like a great set-up fom Abel Cine. I was told that that I could use my Sony HDVF-C35W on the movietube rig - could this be used on yours as well? The C35W is an amazing colour fiewfinder so would be a great asset tp have on the setup. Otherwise I'd use my TVLOGIC 5.6 monitor.
Thanks for time and advice.

I can't confirm, just some posts subject to speculation... It could also be 10 bit but really 8 bit padded to 10...

too late! Picking it up tomorrow! Am happy with the decision though. I have all the accessories for it, lenses etc, and am excited about what I can potentially do with it.

So, did you get the Ninja? It should be fine. The Sony representative for Germany just confirmed to me that it's true 10 bit through HDMI, and I've known the guy for years, he's not telling BS.

Plus, our tests of S-Log recorded via HDMI to the Ninja show excellent grading quality, so it seems correct.

True 10bit through the HDMI! That's awesome news - thanks Nomad! I already have the Ninja - I have been using it with my AF101 and I think it's a great piece of kit. That really is tremendous news as I now don't have to worry about getting a Samurai or another device. The Ninja really is a great piece of kit, and its internal hard drives are really well priced and a great way of backing up footage too, AND is suits my work flow. I have been using it a its ProRes LT setting and have been really happy with it. Thanks again!

You might want to reconsider the prorez LT setting though. I know its a lower bit rate and lets you record longer, but prorez is very inefficent. When you cut its bit rate it has a direct effect. I looked at it and decided I couldn't take the hit. Depends on your final distribution.

I could be way off on this but I would look further into whether that HDMI output was true 10bit or not. There was a lot of discussion about it when the F3 came out and as I recall the answer was negative. You might check with Alistair Chapman who generally knows his Sony specs very well. Sometimes the reps are not the most well informed. Alistair is on the DVInfo.net boards alot so you could post the question there.

Just got F3 yesterday! Can I just please check which settings on the F3 output a HD signal through the SDI and HDMI sockets. I have selected SDI/HDMI/i.LINK I/o Select: HD SDI & HDMI . I have the bnc lead going from sdi to the TVLOGIC monitor which recognises it as a 1080 50i signal. But is this outputting the HD signal through the hdmi as well? Thanks!
