Countryman B6 lav

You can do that, but I've been told the head pulls off easily, so you need to be very careful removing the tape. The caps are not very expensive, so I would still recommend you go with the caps.

The B6 came today. Yeah... it's small alright. Wow. Don't drop one of the protective caps unless you've got some time to kill.

The cord is nice. It's got a weird texture to it. When I first took it out I thought it had some kind of sleeve like a miniature high-end cable... you can feel it instantly. My guess is this is a big help with the handling noise and why they claim improve characteristics of cord rub over other lavs.

They have 3-stages of heatshrink on my lav at the connector. You can easily see the 3 steps. Maybe they heard the complaints about the wire at the connector before?

I really like the cloth pouch / man purse that they give you with this thing. My trams all had a little box that snapped shut... you had to push it closed, but when it shut the whole room heard it. This bag quietly zips open and closed so you could sneak something out of it and back in again no problem. Also it's got 3 pouches on one side and one big pouch on the other. It's really a nice "extra" that's just part of the cost.

The tram clips and mounting solutions were mostly metal and these are plastic... so I don't like that as much, but it's no big deal.

I ordered some extra stuff in other colors but with this lav if you must use a windscreen then you pretty much negate the value in the small lav. Without a screen the thing is tiny... with it the B6 is just a little smaller then my MKE2.

The protective caps do not slip on and off very easily. It makes me paranoid about breaking the thing and I'll probably just use the flat cap until further notice.

Well, it's time to take some pics and listen to it. This is the ONE time when I wish it was XLR so I could test the sound without the limitations of the G2.

Since I have another thread going on the value of hardwired lavs please comment on that issue over there if you can.

I really like the sound of the B6. It strikes a good balance between smooth and detailed. The ability to hide the lav in plain site is also very cool.

If I had one complaint it would be that clothing noise can still be a problem. The EMW is reported to be much better at rejecting clothing noise, so I'm gonna' get one of those hardwired and try it out. I think the ideal lav kit would have a couple B6's and a couple EMW's included. The sound of the B6 is so good that I can hardly wait to get the EMW... because I've always liked the ultra-detailed top end of the Trams, but the Trams are so detailed at the top that it goes right into a sizzly character in some situations... So my guess is that the EMW will still have that really detailed, airy top... but no sizzle.

If you can only get one lav then I'd still go with the B6 first. It really is cool being able to place the mic virtually anywhere.

Hey Matt,

I just got both a b-6 and an emw, both wired for G2's. Now I'm waiting on my second G2 and I will do an A/B comparison and post it up. So far, I love the characteristics of both, but haven't used them in real world situations yet. This really did help me confirm that my original "g1" is much better used as a wireless camera link for scratch tracks. ;-)

I also have a B3, but it is currently wired for my Shure wireless, so I can't do a true A/B on it, but the sound is very similar to the B6/EMW from my preliminary tests.

Phil
