Counterweights

I'm attempting to make a shoulder rig that will wrap around my shoulder with the counterweight hanging toward my mid back.

Should the weight that I attach to the end of the rig be the exact same(or closest I can get) to the camera and all other add-ons? My set-up is around 9-10lbs so getting a 10lb weight is optimal i imagine?

Sorry, this is my first go at a DIY rig and I feel like this is a 101 type question.

Any help would be great!

Thank you,
Tyler

Think about a see-saw

If the camera is 5cm in front of the pivot point (your shoulder) and the counter weight is 10cm behind your shoulder then you can get perfect balance with a counter weight 1/2 the mass of your camera

In reality you I doubt you want to want to carry a 20lb rig unless you have an A/C to grab it between shots and carry it for you around the set

Id go for a 1 or 2kg dive weight - I find a 2kg plenty heavy to wish it was lighter after half an hour of lugging the thing about..

You're talking about something as personal as your shoes (in my opinion). What works for you won't work for someone else - it's not an exact science.

Tape a water bottle to your rig where the weight will go, fill it with water (or lead shot or bolts or sand) and play with the amount of weight until it feels right. Then set your final weight to match.

Or as I reply to so many "how-to" posts: test!!!

+1000!

rigs and their makeup depend entirely on how you shoot, what you shoot, your strength and overall body shape and size, as well as specifically what gear you use...
like michael says, only way to accurately answer your question. is move things around and TEST

(Y'know, the answer to about 80% of the questions posted on this site could be "test"...)

(NO offense to the OP, this is a bit more esoteric than "how do I match camera A to camera B"...)
