ok, check this situation out:

i have a folder of about 60 movies (dvcproHD 720, batch converted to h.264 mp4s in FCP)
i emailed one of the smaller clips to my client (shes running windows xp) to make sure she could see it. she got it. everything played great.

so, i loaded up the movies onto a fat32 hard drive (one ive shared between my macs and numerous different windows machines many times before) and dashed off to her office.

drive comes up. files are there but when she opens one. it says its a "file quicktime doesnt understand". same sort of error occurs in windows media player.

so she copied the file i emailed her earlier (the one that worked) onto my drive. so id have something to test from. and i headed back to my office to investigate.

now just for chits and giggles, when i got back, i emailed one of the clips that wouldnt play to her.
she got it. it played JUST FINE!

so my question here is: could emailing a mac-created video clip somehow strip out some mac-centric header or other info that would make it more likely to play on a windows machine?

MORE:
as a side note. earlier today, i connected the above mentioned drive (seagate usb free agent go) to my girlfriends acer netbook. and all the files played fine. so the anomaly here SEEMS to be the clients hp laptop
