Cougar Town

Has the longest cold open of any show on air. Not that I watch it or have any firsthand knowledge of this.

You know, not too long ago I remarked to my wife that the opening credits sequence is a lost art. Hardly any shows have them anymore, and to me, they were always touchstones. They're probably what most people remember about the shows they grew up watching. Who doesn't have the MASH theme or the slo-mo image of the General Lee cresting the hill imprinted indelibly on their brains?

A few days ago I watched a bunch of late '70s/early '80s opening credits on YouTube. Oh my word, they were unbearably long. I guess that says something meaningful. :)

Not me, brother. THE best opening sequence ever created is LOST.

But then again, I tend to watch an entire season of shows all at once, so...

For opening credit sequences: Dexter, Weeds, Deadwood.

I like the opening of Weeds, particularly the early seasons where they played the real "Little Boxes" song. The meaning of the song is a great commentary that sets up the show nicely.

Dexter's is alright -- a little too long for me. When I caught up on DVD, I'd watch the opening sequence once each time I sat down to watch a few episodes, skipping it each time after the first episode of the session.

I hate the opening sequence of Firefly. Annoyed me every time.

I'm fixing this on my new series "Trout Town" - bunch of 40 year old guys who chase 20 year old girls. There will be no credits (except at the strip club and corvette dealership).

Los Plateados has the best opening of all. I miss Telemundo. I'm supposed to get it, too, but my TV stopped accepting channel 78 as an option.

The ones that drive me crazy are the one that do the opening, then titles, and then right into the story with no commercial break.

They train me for years to watch a little bit, then have time to run to bathroom before the meat of the program, but now they screw up my bladder schedule.

I miss the opening credits to shows. How many of us remember entire songs just from a couple of words:
"Show me that smile again..."
"What ever happened to predictability..."
"It's a rare condition, this day in age..."

Man, I watched some lame shows.

We can thank advertising for killing that goodness. More time for spots.

I have seen Cougar Town and it's like yeah....15 minutes into the show they drop the opening credits, what's up with that? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG):Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

@ Drew: Weeds original opening credits = amazing.

Yeah, the original Weeds opening credits were really good - a lot of Land Rovers, and that's always a good thing.

Dexter's open sequence is fantastic and I've looked at my stubble in macro as a direct result of that little piece of art. For a while, as I was plowing through S1 and S2 on Netflix, I wanted to skip it, but now I study the open closely each and every time I watch. That the sound wasn't ignored in the sequence makes it even more compelling - especially in 5.1 (and forced to 7.1) - just off-the-hook!

The truly lame shows are the ones which only lasted 2-3 episodes. Like Finder of Lost Loves or Supertrain or Automan.

Here are a couple of sequences which don't quite measure up to the ones we remember.

Yes, the sound is worth mentioning. The sound of shoelaces being tied, or a t-shirt being put on. Very cool.
