Cory Haim RIP

Reinforces my suspicion that one of the cruelest things you can do to a child is channel them into a professional acting career...

I have friends and family in the movie industry (pretty high up), they all protect their kids from the industry like you wouldn't believe, they know what it does to kids/people, their kids don't know who Britttney Spears is (VERY hard to do in LA) or the other kid actors with the exception of Zack & Codey (some tv show) and Molly Cyrus for a reason. They will never work in the industry for a reason and they could be in any feature movie with a phone call, turned into a child star over night - NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. It's pretty funny how most parents (outside of the biz) want their kids to be famous and get into acting but the studio exec's and the guys who run the town protect their kids from it like you wouldn't believe.

These drug overdosses are becoming so 80's.

Miley Cyrus.

I can't even tell you how embarrassed I am to admit that I know that, but a lot of this sh*t is just inescapable, no matter how much you try to avoid it...

...sure, people with some idea of the hazards involved will try to protect their kids, or if their kids really have the calling, to shepherd them through it so they don't get destroyed by the experience...

I think that part of it is the difference between letting your kid follow their dreams and using your kid as a meal ticket.

If my daughter (who is 8 and loves Miley Cyrus), wanted to sing or act, I would encourage that. But I would also try and teach her that you can get an immense amount of satisfaction out of those things without being a "star" Being famous should not be an end unto itself. That's how we wind up with the Hinckleys of the world.

If she wanted to shoot for the big time, I would help her. But she would never be out of my site until her favorite word was "No"

Bummer...what a troubled guy. Hate to see it, but hopefully he's in a better place now.
Just wish he got the help he needed to get better.

Overdose is a great way to conceal suicide. Not saying that's what happened to Haim, but it does happen...

I don't know that it's child stardom that's 100% to blame as the root cause. Maybe it's more of a catalyst that provides access and means to enough rope to hang yourself.

Just saw a 2 hour special on bio about child stars and pretty much all of them, the ones that turned out OK and the ones that didn't, said that the ones that went downhill had lives that were broken elsewhere but that, while the child stardom absolutely contributed, it's more that it just just gave them the means to run themselves into the ground.

There were lots of stories from the ones that were OK about the things their parents did to keep them grounded and in charge of their own business etc.

I do think it's hardest for the good looking / cute ones though. Take Feldman and Haim. If your Haim it may be easy to think "I've peaked at 17. What happens when I lose my hair, get old, etc." If your Haim, you've always been freaky looking and weird and gotten by on something besides sheer looks. Bonaducci is another example. Fat child star. Ripped L.A. talk show host and considers his childhood stardom a significant achievement but not one that he's bested several times over in his adult life by more significant things (according to him).

I expected the other Cory to go first... You know.. the strange Michaeel Jackson wannabe?
Sad.

Huh? Excpet he (Feldman) is a clean and sober vegetarian, a father, and until just recently happily married to an underwear model.

Any way you look at it, it's quite sad.

It wasn't long ago that he was living with his Mom back in Toronto, squeezed into a one bedroom apartment.

Then he tried to make a comeback in L.A. and I guess that fizzled out.

RIP

It's sad, no doubt about it. Put your kid on a pedistal, make them a star, let them miss out on knowing what it's like to be a kid, hold their hand if you want during the process but when it's all ripped out from under them they enter severe depression, they start on the drugs and alcohol wondering why no one likes them or gives them the attention they MUST HAVE to feel good about themselves. Uggghh, don't think for a minute anyone can reverse a former childstars EXPECTATIONS when they are older (at least not unless they almost die from a drug overdose). I'll bet the ranch on Corey commiting suicide with drugs, my personal thoughts are he ment to do it and is in a better place now.

Sorry about calling Miley Molly, I should know better, I hear about her on a personal level all the time.

Tragic. I lost a true love when she was 38, a make up artist. If you do not keep yourself grounded this industry will grind you up.

It's a game. You have to play it. I think anyone who treats it different runs a serious risk of losing their marbles.

I know a guy who killed himself here in STL... just dealing with normal life... And I know plenty of people who didn't have a childhood for one reason or another.

There's a lot of truth on this page... that yes, Hollywood is a game... and yes, it's sad any way you look at it.

RIP Corey.

Say what you will about Corey

He's a great memory for me.

The Lost Boys, Silver Bullet and the wonderful Lucas.

I totally agree John. Lost boys is a fave. Even if he never made another movie, the chemistry with Feldman and his whole mall fashion victim but super charming character really helped make that movie a great memory.

It's the unsiad that people need to know more about if they want to prance their kid around as an actor or beauty qeen etc. 12 child stars come to mind right now that DIED from an overdosed (not counting suicide), all were good people who didn't know how to get themselves out of a ditch or be true to their soul (from the business and people who got them there). You'd think agents would care, NO, they want their 10ish % (70% for branding a no name child star for the first couple years btw).

Please listen to me, if you are a parent let your kid be a kid. Please!

I begged a studio exec to do a modern day lost boys for adults (after the twilight fame) BEGGED, a modern day Lost Boys for our generation was all I wanted, one of my fav movies as a teen (less then zero was the other one that summer when I was 17)

'License to Drive" was my fantasy film when i was in middle school...i had "get outta my dreams, and into my car..." repeating in my head all night at work tonight....

You'd think agents would care,

Two agents are sitting at the bar in their favorite Hollywood watering hole.

In walks this gorgeous knockout 20-year-old-woman in a little clingy black cocktail dress.

The first agent looks her over, licks his lips, and says Boy, I'd sure like to f*ck her!

The second agents looks the woman over and asks Really? Out of what?
