Corrupted clip on P2 Card

Hi everyone,

I have a corrupted clip on a P2 card. It's a 32GB card and was recorded on an HPX2700. It's about a 15GB file. I have tried importing through FCP, copying to desktop and then importing, and have tried importing through P2CMS. All have failed. I checked the clip out in the camera, and it says it's fine, so the "repair clip" function did not work. In FCP, the import just fails, the Finder (on Mac) says it can't read the file once it gets about 5 gigs in, and the P2CMS software says "it rolled back". Not sure what that means.

What's really strange is that on all these failed imports, transfers, etc., when the transfer fails, the card will usually spontaneously eject itself off the desktop.

There are other clips on the card and they imported fine.

Needless to say the material in that clip is extremely important, and I have to find a way to recover it.

Any suggestions would be fantastic!

Thanks,

Peter

Does that Camera Play the clip? like past the 5min mark?
If So Do you have access to a BlackMagic/Aja/MotuV3/4 with SDI?

Are you exporting to a FAT32 drive or XFS?
Have you tryed the offload on a PC?

More info...

Went HDSDI from 2700, through AJAIOHD, into computer. Was able to get 9:30 into the clip and then it stopped. Now I'm "rewinding" from the previous clip to that point and am actually able to rewind through the corrupted part, but when I start playing, say at 9:15, it again stops playback at 9:30. So now I'm going to try to rewind to about 9:32, and see if I can pick up recording from there. Seems there's just a little corrupted portion of the clip/card. Really strange. Especially strange that I can still rewind through this section without playback stopping.

very strange, maybe check your card in the P2 Formatter app, i think its got a Health check in it, or set your camera recording one day and record the whole card and try and offload again, the CPU in a P2 card is usually smart enough to flag bad sectors so they don't get used again

Just used P2 Card Formatter and the card checked out OK.

I was able to recover everything (using HDSDI stream) except about 3 seconds of material. It was a good 3 seconds, but at least I got everything else (a 33 minute clip).

It seems like this really was almost a "tape hit", except on the P2 card. When I have time I will run a record loop on it and see what I get.

I've probably shot 600-700 hours on P2 and this is my first "lost frame", so not too bad.

Lastclip.txt?

It sounds like a spanned clip was corrupted or the lastclip.txt file might've gotten corrupted in the transfer process.

Make sure you always write-protect the card before you mount on the desktop.

i thought a new file was created every 2 seconds with p2. so if you lost anything it would never be more than 2 seconds... is this not the case?

Hey guys,

Yes, it was about 2 seconds worth of material.

I always write-protect the cards, so I don't think that was it. The .txt file seems to be fine -- it was just one of the clips on the card (one of the mxf files) that was corrupted. I wasn't able to transfer to computer on Finder, either.

I think it was just a once-in-a-million camera glitch.

Hi Peter,
was it possible that your power into the cam was interupted during recording, a loose on not solid mounted battery or connection may have caused it, were you on the sticks or off the shoulder at the point of issue..
When I ever have issues I backtrack and that usually yields the problem. ( Only glitch-" about a 12 frame image breakup" I had quite some time ago was fixed with a hurried up-dated Camera Firmware from Panasonic)

Hi Tom,

I don't think that was it. I was running off a Dionic 90 and the camera was completely stationary, so no bumps or jolts.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi Peter,

Hmmmm, that is a strange one, I give my gear these days two chances, then I dump it, hope your not at "Strike one".
I've found gear is well "outdated" prior to being "worn out". I don't have as much enthusiasm as I used to years ago for my kit because of it.
Seems that is the way the industry is going.

Yeah, we'll see if it happens again. I just got the camera in December, so hopefully it isn't worn out yet! Has a 5-year warranty, though, so that is some reassurance.
