Correctly White Balancing the HPX170

Black balancing is unrelated to white balancing -- I don't see why they would want you to black balance both before and after white balancing. Can't hurt, but -- in my years I've never done it that way and I haven't encountered anyone else who does either.

To black balance, all you have to do is hold the white balance button down a little longer; it'll do a white balance and if you're still holding the button down it'll do an automatic black balance. There is no procedure to follow, you don't need to point at something black or anything, it does it all internally, automatically.

So real quick, if i black balance after i white balance will it affect my white balance if its not pointing at something white? Or should i just black balance first then white balance so i dont have to worry about it? thanks

Not in the least.

White Balance requires you to point the camera at something white. When you black balance, the camera shuts its iris to prevent any light from reaching the sensor (thus giving a "true black") and balances against that. The correct procedure is to white balance and then to black balance, which is why the camera does it in that order. I say just white balance as normal, but hold the button down a little longer and the camera will automatically black balance. It's a simple and easy habit to get into.

It may have an effect on noise in the darks. It is really about letting the camera know what "true black" should be, and it can then examine its sensor and see if it's generating noisy blacks and fix those, or it may even affect fixing dead pixels; it'll fix if your camera is developing a blue shade in the shadows (sometimes happens when a camera is out of black balance) etc.
