correct capture settings? PAL 25p ... in FCS

Hello,

I'm pretty new to all this so here are some basic questions:

I just wanted to check with the pros that i was using the correct settings to capture my footage into Final Cut 6.

My camera is a DVX100B, so it's PAL and i'm using 25p progressive setting in my scene file, and i shoot in the squeeze mode 16:9.

In Final Cut 6, i use the easy setting called DV/Panasonic DVCPRO, then 25 fps, then DV -PAL Anamorphic.

First could you confirm to me that that's ok?

Then, how does it know that i'km using progressive mode?

Then, what's the Cinema Tool for? I read it's converting 25p to 24p ... do I want that? should i use it for anything in particular here? Will it help me get even more movie "look" ?

Note: I would like to output PAL DVDs in 16:9 ...

Can anyone guide me?

Thanks,
Kat

Hi Kat,
it's even simpler. Just use the easy setup "DV PAL anamorphic". For capturing it's not relevant if you shoot interlaced or progressive. FCP doesn't care. If you include any motion effects in FCP, make sure to change the sequence settings from interlaced to progressive, though.
Cinema Tools is for changing framerates and working with pulldowns, which are for NTSC only. No need to worry about it right now. You don't want 24p unless you need to make NTSC 24p DVDs for USA or Asia. Otherwise just stick to 25p PAL - better resolution and close enough to 24p to be just as film-ish looking.
Hope this helps,
thomas

Cool! Danke Thomas!

My next challenge is exporting it correctly with DVD Studio Pro because for now, it outputs 4:3 cutting all the menus and footage from my 16:9 to 4:3, that's ugly!

I checked in the Settings and it says everywhere 16:9 except ... what bothers me in the General Pane where the "SD DVD Menus, Tracks and slideshows" says 19:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox or Just pan-scan or just letterbox or 4:3 ....

I'm just wondering why i can't have just 16:9 ... my footage being in 16:9 why should it be letterboxed or pan-scan ?
if you have any hint ...
Also, when i click on a template, it resizes my menu screen to 4:3! Those templates have no 16:9 versions?
Maybe i should be asking this in another forum, but since you seemed to be a specialist, i took the opportunity to ask you ;-)

katja

Hallo Katja,
the display option refers to what should happen, if the DVD is played back on a 4:3 device. So if you want it to stay 16:9, you should select Letterbox, (so it'll be letterboxed on a 4:3 TV).
I just checked and applied a template and could easily switch it to 16:9. Obviously the background will be stretched but the fonts won't. So with a little work you could probably adapt one of the templates to 16:9 easily.
Ich hoffe das hilft,
thomas
