Coronavirus Impact

Just woken up to the news that some States here in Oz have instituted border controls. If you cross a State line you go into 14 isolation. It's only a matter of time before all States introduce the same steps.

Chris Young.

My best mate drove from Melbourne to Sydney yesterday to collect his fiancee, who'd flown up there to help her sister out - he's trying to rush her home before the borders are locked down. Tense stuff.

I've just had the last of my jobs for the next three months indefinitely postponed.

Interesting times ahead. I'm going to see if I can return to my publishing origins for the time being and pickup some writing work.

One of my buddies had CBS News reach out to him earlier for a crew inquiry and said this is how they are doing things, now:

Can only conduct interviews outdoors
Must be at least 6 feet from the person being interviewed
Must use either a boom mic or hand the interviewee a hand-held mic, then wipe it down once done
Cannot enter hospitals.

"South Korea avoided locking down any city, but only by moving early and with extraordinary speed. In January, the country had four companies making tests, and as of March 9 had tested 210,000 citizens — the equivalent of testing 2.3 million Americans.

As of the same date, fewer than 9,000 Americans had been tested.

Everyone who is infected in South Korea goes into isolation in government shelters, and phones and credit card data are used to trace their prior movements and find their contacts. Where they walked before they fell ill is broadcast to the cellphones of everyone who was nearby.

Anyone even potentially exposed is quarantined at home; a GPS app tells the police if that person goes outside. The fine for doing so is $8,000."

Has anyone tried to order anything from Amazon today? I presume they must just be overwhelmed beyond anything they could have ever imagined and are trying to prioritize "essential" items. I just jumped on to order an optical audio cable for one that failed the other night(I know, not exactly an essential item given our current state) and I was about to click BUY when I noticed the delivery date wasn't for this Tuesday, it actually said Tuesday April 21st. Then I started clicking around on some other items and out of eight or 10 items I checked, only two gave delivery dates of this week(3/26). Everything else was April 21st.

Amazon Prime delivery delays are now as long as a month (Vox)

Also Prime Pantry had no delivery dates. I put a few things in my cart but then could not check out, because Delivery Date is a required field and they were all grayed out.

Hi guys,

I know that many of you are from all over the world. Here in CT, Coronavirus (covid-19) has just started disrupting life here. My kid is home from school and work has slowed down. Luckily, everyone in my family is healthy. I wish the best for all of you.

I recently went to my local grocery store and had a surreal experience. I made a short little video documenting it:

Sweden’s reaction
an article from Bloomberg site

“sure we will get an entirely clear picture of which measures were most effective,” Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s top epidemiologist, said at a press conference in Stockholm on Monday. He underscored Sweden’s adherence to what he said was the most important principle: Protecting the elderly through isolation.”

We'll see if they're successful. I think the UK started with that approach and changed course when they realized how many people would die.

Part of the Swedish outcome may hinge on how healthy their general population is to begin with. Younger people can have a severe case of covid or die if they have comorbidities. And the American public, for example, is not that healthy.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if practically every country besides Sweden was just overreacting. But good luck to them.

I just learned that coronavirus-infected people infect an average of 2-3 other people. Influenza sufferers only infect 1.3 people on average. Coronavirus is much more contagious.

I actually posted about that in the Contagion thread.

It's called R0 (R-naught) and it's the reproduction number of an infection.

Older studies - 10+ years ago - had seasonal influenza at 1.3-1.6, but some studies now show it higher above 2 (has it strengthened?), which would make it as contagious - more likely slightly less depending on the exact comparison - as COVID-19 (based on the latter's current research).

However, I wouldn't be surprised if this coronavirus kept increasing as it continues to infect people.

[The virus in Contagion jumped from R2 to R4.]

Now this movie we're living is threatening to become Children of Men--

Saw this earlier today.

Sorry, but in my opinion, that site is total baloney.
Apart from the fact that we can't make predictions based on the number of people tested, a lockdown spreads infections over time it does not diminish total infections over time because when the lockdown is eventually over (you can't be in lockdown forever) then the infections start again as if no time was elapsed.

The suggestion that a lockdown avoids people getting infected over time is an illusion.

I wish the state of Colorado would lockdown... Denver County is sheltering in place tomorrow... I live two counties south of Denver so no lockdown for me. They are leaving all the parks open and they are getting overloaded, people are going to get sick.. Colorado is a heavily populated state of young people and not to stereotype but most kids dont listen to what adults have to say, esp the hippies out here lol ( I know I didnt at their age ). Youth heavy states like Colorado need to lockdown. Our cases are going up quite a bit.
