Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

I'm doing Puke Green and using USB2.0 on set for offloading. I'm not worried about on-set cutting, only offloading and storage.

Update for you: Gigabyte DS4 SLI 650i boards are 139.99. I think I might be switching up since I have until Friday to re-order again.

That should be a happy medium for upgrades as well. 1333mhz FSB. Yum. HOWEVER... Drawback is 4 Sata ports as opposed to 6 on the DS3.

Is it worth it? I'm thinking I could do Quad Monitor setup with the DS4. But more internal Hardware with DS3.

Quad monitor setup on the DS4? Why? does it come with on-board video?

If the 650i chipset "fits your OS needs" then go for it... But I know nothing about the DS4... If it has solid capasitors and it has been out for a while (BIOS updates) then it might be worth to read up about if on forums, but if people haven't OC'ed with it, and used it for months with stability and good numbers then you are asking for trouble...

The DS3 can handle 1333MHz FSB.

Rev 3.3 can do 1333FSB but you'd have to get Rev 3.3. DS4 has been OC'd and everything. Check OC.NET

What do you mean? I am not trying to build an OSX computer. And I said I haven't seen any DS4's OC'ed, actually I haven't seen anything about them period.
Anyway...

CHECK THIS OUT!!!

I started doing my Q6600 research and putting in a reservation with Tank Guys where you can select your stepping to make sure I get a $250 Q6600 as soon as prices drop. Then I found out a new steppping was just anounced and it seems it will be able to handle higher temps by 11C and if might OC higher.

It was generally speaking. Not you as in YOU... as in someone trying to get a board that has 1333mhz FSB support. http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4939 -- DS4

By the time Q6600 comes down in pricing I'll be upgrading to a Yorkfield anyway. Gigabyte Bearlake, DDR3, etc etc. I'll be fine with paying more and selling Q6600 Cheap to get 6mb cache and native Quad.

FINALLY! The NewEgg order has been recieved. Updating the front page because I changed motherboards at the last minute

Went to DS4 instead of the DS3.

You should go ahead and get that pcmcia slot card. And, in the future you can get your ethernet pcmcia, fw800 pcmcia, etc, etc.

Jason

Actually I am, but I'm waiting on another to become available from NewEgg. It's a 2port that has PCI firewire card included and it's 20.00 less than that Startech one. Just gotta wait on it or find it elsewhere.

I am also checking out a N050GX case right now on ebay. I'll probably pick that up along with the rest of my PC stuff if I don't bite on the new LCD TV + 21".

Great!

Also, I want to know all you've read about native Quads... I am wondering if I should get the Q6600 or skip an other step... I want a CPU that will handle 1080p without breaking a sweat...

When is DDR3 scheduled for? My G.Skill HZ's are only $130 a pair... so tempting, if I only had 8.0 already, I would love to get it...

Anyway, I really want to hear about your CPU findings... please share your plans.

I've read up on Anandtech on Yorkfields and Wolfdales, lots of tasty info on cache levels and the likes. Course you already know all the basics that we saw from the upgrade path Pentium D to Core 2 Duo. Less heat output, etc, etc.

I'm concerned with the higher cache, 6mb - 12mb. That's where I want to be. :D

DDR3 is actually going to be useless, sounds like. Reading on OC.NET, Legion, Anandtech and a few other sites, DDR3 really isn't going to be offering much more than the best DDR2, which will be cheaper naturally.

New intel boards = HDMI? That's what I'm talkin' about. That could be interesting. Gigabyte Bearlake board sometime in June? I'm not going to pay to be bleeding edge, considering other stuff I need to save on. Maybe sometime at the end of next year, maybe earlier depending. But I honestly think having a 1333mhz motherboard to support future Core 2 Native archictecture is all I'm gonna need, aside from Vista 64 apps + 8gb of OC'd DDR2-1000 ram, or native 1000.

So I'd say my hardware upgrade path looks like:

Yorkfield Native Quad processor mated to Tuniq 120
Newest OS X Supported Video Card Late 07 early 08
6GB Ram late 07 early 08

That's as far as horsepower goes.

On that Gigabyte SLi 650i DS4 board-- might have a little issue with running the sucker in my rig paired with OS X, so I bought a Rev3.3 DS3 board off'a ebay as well just in case. The 520FSB option that the guys discovered in that thread made me leap on it a little too fast.

We'll see.

I think if you wait for the new Q6600's @ 250.00 you'll be straight. If I could wait til then I'd do it, I can't.

Ok... I keep hearing about the Pennyrod... but is that ways away? Is it the 8-core? I thing 4-core is what we (1080'ers) need... beyond will only be for 2K 100% real-time, for which I can happily wait a few years... well, we'll see... but a great OC on a Quad should handle 2k/4:4:4 1080 well enough, right...?

Why is that..? I heard they don't matter much, but didn't look too far into it... and it is mostly gamers on these forums.

That is what I heard so I got the HZs which are the most stable OC'ers at 1100MHz I could find...

HDMI? Cool, hehe, sure, why not!
8GB of RAM? now you are loosing it... or you might know of some cool hardware management being developed for an app or two. Which, when? I'll be happy with 4GB of DDR2-1100 (which I will run at 950 with really low timings)

6GB? WTF r u talking about now? U lost me... 6? So your DDR pairs don't need to be the same, just amongst themselves? Cause if so I might wait and get 2GB sticks too then... it might be better to wait for better faster 2GB sticks to come out first... 4GB is a lot, especially when the speed is high cause that increases your bandwidth just the same...

LOL... the Egg will take it back but u will have to re-sell the DS3 if you keep the 4

I just read up a bit and apparently Q6600 ate technically a Dual Duo E6600...
I guess I should call Sony and ask about the threading provisions written into 8.0 for said setup... and if not significant maybe I should wait...
Are there Native Quads out yet?

Native Quads aren't out yet.

6 gb = 2 x 2gb sticks 2 x 1 gig sticks = 6. Simple.

I'm keeping DS3 Rev3.3 instead of DS4-- I don't want the hassle.

Update:

I was leavin' late out of the door this morning and behold-- THE UPS MAN WAS AT THE FRONT DOOR WITH MY SHIZZLE!!

NewEgg got my entire PC order here in ONE DAY after verification. Sweeeeeet. Too bad the DS3 board isn't in that order and is coming from Ebay. =( So I still can't install til then. Don't wanna use the 650i SLi board.

Home on lunch!

Dude... me too, UPS guy dropped off two 50ft extensions, but like 30min later he came back with the 24" Gateway!

BTW you don't read my posts... but hey... make them long an they won't read them...

Thanks for the freekin' help picking the LCD! It is SOOOOO much better than the Dell!!! Can't wait to show you guys the box and yoke we made with an other member... you can put it on a C-stand or any other stand with a pin, it turns 360 and swivels in a full circle... so completely M2 friendly... no need for their optical adapter fancy hardware or mounting a monitor upside down... just spin it up 360 and around 180...

Did you call them saying you were trying to refuse the DS4 ut it was in the same box? If you say that the'll give you a shipping label for free.

ROFL you're right, sometimes I don't read your entire posts. My bad. Which part did I miss that you wanted to discuss?

I TOLD you the Gateway was so much better man. I can't wait to get my second screen. It's so much brighter, so robust. Definitely worth it's salt.

I will call newEgg and tell them I tried to refuse the DS4, thanks for the tip! I'll take pictures of the hardware as soon as I get a chance to leave the office.

Hold on though WTF are you talking about with the Gateway 24"??? How is it completely Adapter friendly? Explain yourself!!! Pictures! As far as I knew you could only spin it 180, not completely upside down.

Yea, well I though that by helping you so much, and the extra help you'll get when you actually OC that you owed me reading my posts... but... can't force you.

Newegg will always say no... 100%, but if you give them a 60% rational reason why you deserve the label and make it clear that you'd be upset if you don't get it... well I got a million, so trust me. They are like $10 otherwise...

Nah I read most of it, but can't understand parts of it. Like the paired ram thing, I thought you just meant Pairing the same sizes in the ports. Not the same brand. I've never had an issue loading different brand o'ram.

Explain the screen thing! You can spin it a complete 360 instead of just 180? Apparently you can just remove it, remount for upside down and use it that way. Aragon (Cynic) pointed that out just now.

The ram thing:
If you have four DIMMs... to "enable" DDR2 you must have the same exact chips in the matching DIMMs... so A B A B... both A and B pairs are taking advantage of DDR2... but A B A C... only the A pair does and B and C are just added single sticks... I read that by doing this, even by running A B A # (# being "empty") you get little or no benefit... so you either run A # A # for XP regardless of the 3GB max, or you get VIsta and run whatever you want up to 8GB... there are ways out there for running 4GB in XP though...

The monitor stand:
No... you can basically aim the screen in any direction you want, pointing towards any point in a sphere... so to work with an M2 all I do is pull down on the bottom tip of the box so as to spin it like a carnival wheel and stop it when facing away from me... then I loosen the screw on the pin receptor to allow the Yoke to turn and I spin it left or right 180....

I guess I might have messed you buy by saying 360 and 180 when it is 180 degrees that you have to turn it (both left-right and up-down) so as to "flip-it"

The best part besides the adjustments, is that I didn't even have to get a Baby Roller cause it works with all my C-Stand and light stands! But the Baby Roller is going to be absolute perfection and such a bliss!! Cause it will go low enough for you to watch from a chair and high enough for viewing standing up. AND it will roll around hapily with a 20lbs sand bag!

I am also planning on quickly rolling it to my Laptop and using it as a second display for editing during lunch... and when I can set up close enough to it I will just run the laptop and play clips back on the PIP :)

NOW YOU REALLY OWE ME!

wouldn't it be really funny if after a week of reading this thread...the computer won't post?

okay, maybe it's just me with the dark sense of humor.

Latin: I didn't even know that. I guess because the 22" doesn't swivel at all. It's static. But nice, man. That's a huge plus that I didn't know about.

PIP is awesome. I must find better uses for it though.

Ugafan: that would be the suck. I still have to wait a few days for the other motherboard but hey, it's all good. Wish I wouldn't have switched up on a thought.

Well it won't! Possibly many times! :) But that's the whole idea cause he'll try to find the highest stable clock and he might try settings that don't post... lol

Now if it never does post to begin with (which is what you were saying) then there is something seriously wrong and I'll try to give you a guide:

First place to look at will be the RAM, individual sticks might not like all DIMMs equally... a simple repositioning of them could save you from a panic attack...

If this doesn't do it then I would roll up my sleeves and start off by taking off all expansion cards so as to isolate the problem by slowly adding to the system till it won't post again...

First you should try a single stick, if that doesn't work, the same stick on each of the other three DIMMs... then you move on to the other memory stick and repeat...

If that doesn't do it, then you get a glass of water, and then re-seat the CPU...

If that doesn't do it... your PSU might be seriously damaged... but if it turns on 90% it isn't the problem... start off by ordering a new set of memory, then the PSU...

Now if you posted, but one stick works and the other doesn't you order a new pair and call Newegg letting them know, they'll give you a shipping label for free... when you get the second set you figure out if the new pair works first... if not you mix and match and then you mail the pair you like the least back to Newegg for a 100% refund, no re-stocking no shipping...

Then you can throw everything back on and see if it posts... if it doesn't, lol you would have a second problem and then you should try adding one thing at a time to see what causes it to be unable to post. RMA that sucker.

You are welcome Kholi! lol
(I am trying to feed him as much info as possible so he lets me work w/him on a HYDRA project, lol!)
