Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

Ahhhhh well that'll certainly sour your sauce. I'll paint the bezel silver to mimic the Cinema Displays for ya then. =P

By the way, the Apple Cinema displays really can't be beat. I know that the Dell and Apple use the same LG screen, and I think the Gateways use LG's as well, but the Apple is just so much more robust for whatever reason. I'm not sure if it's the Monitor Processor or what, but they're the best o'the bunch IMO.

Wish I could afford to spend 1000.00 on a pair of 23" screens. =(

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822110002 -- There you go. If you want a Firewire Enclosure, that's the one I'd get. FW800/400/USB2.0

They're offering a lesser model one with 2 x 160gb HDD's for free.

And what credit card? I pay cash for everything. LOL If I had a credit card I would go all out. This is 2400 cash right out of my pocket. The Cinema Displays are just that: Cinema Displays. They're kick-ass. You can't even connect any other peripherals to it outside of USB and they can only double as camera monitors with Kona converters.

I'm happy with 21", 22", and 24" Gateways. Oh yeah, I decided to buy a 21" as well for the camera instead of hauling around the 22" or 24".

yeah, I looked at that enclosure, but it does not do RAID 1, which makes it basically useless in my eyes.

I'll see how mine performs.

If you've got the money, you can go G-Tech G-Raid. I BELIEVE they do Raid0,Raid1 over FW800.

AH! You reminded me, i need to add Blu Ray burner to the future upgrades list. That's probably going to be my method of storage from now on. Archiving to Dual layer 50gb discs once the cost per gig comes down some more.

I'm suspecting by 3rd Quarter or early 4th quarter. That SOUNDS like the most economical solution to me.

yeah, but those are in no way designed to last any amount of time...I would not trust my footage to a piece of plastic from bestbuy...

Awww. Bank and NewEgg didn't communicate right and I didn't get verified yesterday. They don't deliver saturday and sunday so I won't be getting my computer parts until monday. How sad.

Guess it's a free weekend to spend at the movies or something.

I am trying to build a wooden box for my 24: Gateway before we start shooting the 15th/17th... I am hoping to be able to finish making a home made yoke as close to the ones seen on the FL-220 from Flo Lights... I am also getting a baby roller from American... that way it can turn 360, tilt as much as necessary, and it can go down to chair level and standing up level... all with wheels... it adds about $250 to the equation, plus a lot of work, but it will look professional while delivering the best I could ask for in mobility... I will hopefully get to calibrate with Spider Brace 2 Pro... if that doesn't work I'll manually calibrate...

The WD... I feel the same way you do about it... but I payed $305... so I feel weird about the whole thing... it will be RAID1 so loss worried about HDD failure, but I do hate the start-up sequence from the myBooks... it takes long and sometimes (about 2 in 2 1/2 months) it required a re-start... I might just go ahead and return it in a few weeks to get the puke-green 2-bay and buy a pair of 750GB which I'd use as internals and throw two 320 in it... but that is once again more money... it just feels dumb to get a 6th and 7th 320GB... my next drives should be bigger...

I definitely have no need for it now, so I will create a third copy in my Laptop's second 100GB HDD wich I formatted and check for errors, even if it is a 4200rpm!
I only have an 8GB right now though so it won't be that long of a dump.

Just for extra redundancy cause now you scared me even more...

They can't be that bad...?

I don't trust Western-Digital. The few times you saw it on my lists were because I wasn't paying attention to the brand name. Needless to say they were immediately switched out for Seagates.

No drive is fail-proof, I just trust Seagates more.

I'm fine with trusting my stuff to Blu-Ray Discs. And I will be for all of my storage needs in the near future.

I'm gonna pick up the Puke Green Box (that's what it's called from now on) That Ramsey has and two 320gb's for editing. I think it's the best solution for me.

And now that my NewEgg order is so screwed up, I won't get it til WEDNESDAY. Omfg so awesome. The stupid Bank and NewEgg had conflicts verifying my information for such a large purchase. How freaking LAME.

Makes me freakin sick. But I guess I get to think about more parts since the order has been voided. Will re-order this Thursday or Friday.

=(

add the 2.99 and that will shave a day off your delivery time... or save the 3$ and place it super early in the morning/the day before...

DUDE, I FEEL YOUR PAIN, now do you understand why I RMA'ed the video card and the MoBo at the same time?

I want Blu-Ray also... but once the media gets to a real price.... like $5 or less, much less really... I hate overpaying for "Best Buy Plastic", lol I like the name... but I can see it as being a good medium for short term storage (ie: 3-4 years +)

I also want the "ATI-Green Box"... but I only have a little while to decide and it won't be before this project, I get the 1TB myBook tomorow... we shoot the 15-18th... I have more important upgrades in line...

Quad, 2GB of RAM, GTX, studio monitors (using logitech + headphones!)... lights, RedRock's Matte... I will never buy HYDRA or an M2, by the time I deserve to own one instead of rent I will have to look at other newer cameras...

So I just got a little external RAID enclosure in the mail. I was going to order this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332001

but I figured, hey why not get one with dual interface. So I found another product exactly like it, but with a USB as well:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332006

It's a little more, but BAH! It looks like a good little piece of gear, and those trays make swapping out drives nice.

Imagine my surprise and horror when it arrived and it was only RAID 0!!!!!!!

The firewire-only version is RAID 0 and RAID 1!!!

Why??? Why???? Why do this to me???? Argh.

I am keeping this one though and just using is as two disks, and ordering another one for the RAID 1.

Nooooo. You should return it, man. I mean I guess using it as a two-disk external drive could be good seeing as how it's FW400.

I'm definitely getting the Puke Green Box.

How's the heat transfer?

Heat so far is nearly non-existent. It has a good fan. But putting your hand on the case, there is nearly no heat at all. And I have been writing like 30 gigs to BOTH disks at the same time for a while now.

I think I will look at the puke green box. But this one has these sweet trays that pop in and out so nicely...And a handle...but the other one IS puke green...

The Puke Green one has rocked for me. Raid 1 or 0 without the need of software. Just a switch you flip on the back. It also has two usb 2.0 ports. SATA II speeds. Doesn't run hot. Runs quiet. Has a fan. It's Puke green :) I haven't had any problems with mine yet. So, at least you know it will last you 7 months, heh.

Thecus 2050 (the puke green one)

I JUST got my myBook 1TB from WD...

SUCKS 'CAUSE:
_ It averages 36MB/s as RAID1
_ It is WAY too loud for personal use, for location dumps you better unplug it while shooting or the fan will kick in and be clearly heard from 30 yards away. I mean it is pathetically funny how lowd this thing is! Rofl!
_ The fan kicked in right away, though it is kinda hot today in the Valley, but that feels like a blatant threat of possible HDD failure...
_ You switch from RAID1 to RAID0 with software

THEN AGAIN:
_ 1TB and I payed $305.- (after everything)

I do wish this Puke Green thing had F400 so as to have dedicated bus for location cutting... There are others with F400 and 800, but no eSATA, but what's best?

Quiet, with USB2 on set, and fast eSATA at home?

or

Dependable max USB2 speed on set and same speed at home.
(F400, there ain't no 800 in my rig)

I am leaning towards gettin the puke green with two Seagate Perpendiculars (unless the $80 320's are not the best bang for your $ in a week or two).
I will do this as soon as it is back on stock and RMA this POS WD toy.

Any votes for the options above?
