Core 2 Duo Build Project: 2007

Q6600 Core 2 Quad 2.4GhZ CPU Overclocked -> 3.0ghz or 3.2ghz Stable

Sweeeeeeet!

G.Skill DDR2 800 Overclocked -> DDR2 1000 Stable

It WILL be stable... no questions asked... now it 95% chance will be stable at 4-4-4-12 also (you will be stuck at 2T) and you should be able to possibly be stable at 4-4-3-5 but that depends on your sample...

24" GATEWAY FPD2485W HDCP 1080P LCD: 550.00

We have the same one! :dankk2: for the suggestion and help picking it!

MICROSOFT LASER WIRELESS MOUSE: 34.99 ( I love these, sorry. LoL)

They use less than 1% CPU and with a 12GHz system I doubt you'll feel it dude ROFL... but I think you made a small mistake (still can RMA it) I say so cause I went through 2 Microsoft mice before I went to Logitech's.. their BT and 2.4GHz transmitters are what you want... and they aren't that much more... Also, laser is noticeably better tracking... I over-use my mouse... not great with short-cuts yet, or macros... you might not care as much.

COMING SOON:

TUNIQ 120 TOWER: 65.00

You can OC with the stock cooler if you are impatient, but you might have a shut-down or two from the North Bridge if you get high up.

250gb Stripped/Mirrored (2 x 250gb Seagate 7200.10) eSata Thecus N050GX RAID setup: 290.00

You should know this but jic if you have the Stripped you'll keep the full 500GB capacity, it is mirroring that makes you loose one...

 Killer setup!
I can't wait to get my Quadro! Your memory, Mobo, and HDDs are rock solid and faaaaaaast!
Did you pay the $2.99 for fast processing? It would have shipped today... they often get me with that, lol

You'll have to come over my apartment and we can be total PC nerds y0. Especially when I get the "real" project setup. >:D

I hope I can get to at least 3.0ghz on a stock fan til the Tuniq comes in

I saw the Video Card! lol and you were nickle and dime'ing... ROFL
Yea, yo, yo, I'll buy one of those back-packs for the tower and come over wit' it yo, we'll hook em' up on a LAN and go for it yo! ATI vs. NVIDIA!!! Then your mom will come in the room, set down bowl of cheetos, and tell us to behave, ROFL...

Be careful with your NB temps... download Speed Fan and open up the chart with your cores and NB temps... that's gonna get hot.

Also, don't expect to be able to play games at 1920 x 1200... if you do just use your 22"... not enough memory, my 320MB wasn't enough for butter smooth Call Of Duty 2, even with all other settings on lowest...

I don't play games enough to worry about that. Only Counter-Strike 1.6. And maybe Resident Evil 4. Otherwise I'm not into PC gaming. I'd like to setup for a PS3 really soon for Home and all the Squaresoft games headin our way.

:DDDD

And mi madre lives in Georgia!!

Yea, PS3's are nice, but once I get my GTX my computer will be an undisputed PS3 and 360 destroyer... lol

Of course I am getting it for AE and Serious Magic purposes... lol

Mi madre lives in Florida, :(

Wow.

I feel like a dork, but I feel excited for you! It's been a while since I built/upgraded one of my personal computers.

I've never overclocked before, though. Is that a complicated thing to do? I hadn't considered overclocking - just buying the parts and installing the stuff. :D

I can't wait until Wed/Thurs! :P

not that hard at all. it's just a matter of going into the bios and bumping up the bus speed and multiplier to acheive the speed you want. you can also increase the voltage, depending on how far you want to take it.

the downsides are that it voids the warranty and you may screw up your computer. but that's unlikely as most boards shut down before anything gets too bad.

not-at-all dude, over clocking is a MUST!
It "amortizes depreciation", CPUs solid state memory and HDDs (LCDs a bit too) are dropping and will continue to dropp so fast... more over they continue to get faster and faster, and software developers lag behind but try to keep up and make use of the added power rendering our systems useless or. The downside? Shortened life-span of your components... BUT it is NOT an issue if properly cooled and if you stay within decently low voltages. I have read, and the consensus seems to be, that you might shave 2-4 years of life bringing the average life of your components before they fail to about 7, BUT in 7 years you will have already build a new one...

just buy overclocking components that are currently successfully OC'ed by others...

the process is simple, just a tad tedious as it is based on trial and error with only being able to use other's experience as guides of what to expect. every memory module, every CPU every component will be different due to differences within the manufacturing tolerances of each product... as a matter of fact the E6300 through the E6700 (or was it the 66?) are the same exact product, but they separate them based on good better and best batches and set them to the starting clock in factory... so my E6300 is just a "bad" E3600 which "only" could reach 3.2GHz... the best buys right now are the E6400 E6600 and the Quad that Kholi (aka Audi) got for his rig... for us editors I might say that the Quadro might be in fact have already become the only way to go if you can pony up the 500 right now... (based on performance, estimated price drops and re-sale estimates)

Kholi.... I wanna come over and RE-play HALFLIFE2..... At MAX res.... Full textures..... Full lighting..... and make my brain cells explode from awesomeness.

You guys and these PC games!!! Lol. I'm gonna play Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike 1.6 at most. This pup is for work, though. I just got a call today that pretty much reconfirms my decision to plunge in.

Dillont - I'm pretty stoked. I just wish I had it all here now to start working immediately! >;ooooo

Dude.... you should be able to like, play 4 streams of 1080P in Vegas on that monster.

Now that's what I'm talkin about. Even though it doesn't support Quad Core setups right now, it's still going to be faster than my last Core 2 Duo E6300 PC.

You know what I'm excited about, though? HYDRA. That's part of the reason I went ahead and spent the money though you can probably get by with something cheaper. I can't wait to get my Hydra setup maaan.

but you need a mac for it dont you?

Also your mac, can turn the 444 into Prores 422, make an EDL, then make a 444 final out put....... NOICE.

They're working on Windows support, so not just OS X. But, you know... I have THINGS in mind for my PC.

Muaha.

All right, so talk more about the OSX86 stuff. That's why you're doing all of this, right? Have you actually seen this work?

Keep the RAID, and run it in RAID 1. Personally, I think backing up to DVD is remarkably bad idea. Why not check out a tape drive for archiving? I am.

Also, I was looking at this RAID enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817716028

Thoughts?

But really, are you seriously going to run OSX on this box?

Also, that monitor looks pretty crappy. Why not get like dual cinema displays, or at least those big assed Dells?

And Timur, EDLs are not standard.

Oh yeah, and how long before you have this together so we can get a report on how well the OSX stuff works?

He is going to run OSX... but we don't know... though we do know... I mean, how could we not know, I've heard of the DS3 and other components he chose check out on the OSX list of compatible hardware... but he can't say it... So let's just hypothetically consider that he is, from now on, for the sake of this discussion... :)

I like the looks of that enclosure! Sexy-time! Also it is a bit cheaper. If you were considering the other one talked about in this thread (I got interested too) we would have to argue that we'd get the other cause it has an eSATA card... BUT, there is always a but, this card is a PCI card (right? if so...) it isn't a marvelous idea since the transfer rate would be possibly be limited at times by the PCI shared bus which is also shared with USBs and it is 233MB/s... a lot, yes, but not exactly a lot of peace of mind.
I think this is more of a purchase at the F400/800 level... If you want to get a super-dooper enclosure with some crazy fast connection ports and what-not, then you'd have to get one that goes though a PCI express port... preferably one higher than x1... The DS3 has only PCI-E x1's left after he throws that ATI (aka: piece of poop) in the single x16.... lol (we have a nerd-battle going on here)

ANYWAY, someone please comment as I am wondering how the whole external enclosure thing will work when I (looong down the line) get me a nice 4-bay (+) enclosure for 2K/4K... just curious really... and that's more along the lines of what Kholi should invest in if he is infact going to get into the 4:4:4 world with HYDRA... I mean, might as well get something that will somewhat/completely handle 4k if possible... (?)

Two days ago, I was unable to pass on a 1TB WD myBook (I hate myBooks cause they wake up slow) but I had $125 off at Dell so I got it for $305 after taxes... it does 2.0, 400 and 800, it does 80MB/s on a F800 connection when set up in RAID0, of course it is two 500GB drives, and it also does RAID1 which is what I will use it as for redundant location storage and eventually it will become a plain ol' storage drive... maybe a delivery drive? again as RAID1 (only 470GB I suspect)...

sorry if this is half-retarded but I am just now about to go to sleep... (6am here) things get hectic when you are 2 weeks away from the beginning of your shooting schedule... lol...

PEACE
put a fan on it

Actually, I passed on that enclosure because it did not support RAID 1. Ordered another one. I suspect this will be fine for my current 720/1080 needs, but I don't know about Hydra. I too like the eSata for that probably.

I'd love to talk more about the OS X stuff, but I'll prolly get in trouble. So you'll have to visit a separate page for that. I'll be happy to update in emails. But, please do trust in the fact that I'm going to do it. It does work, there's an entire forum that will testify to that.

Dell monitors suck. Cinema Displays are too expensive, but are the best of the bunch. I own a 22" Gateway and the image is stellar. The 24" is just as good with a native 1920x1200 resolution. You should look at it before you judge it, Harris; You might change your mind about it. =) There are a few other members here that have the Gateways and are more than happy they got 'em.

Be glad you passed on that metal enclosure as it's pretty bad on heat. That ain't from the NewEgg page, that's because I've seen one in action here at work. They're not cool at all, in both senses o'the word. Ramsey's Puke-Green box is a pretty solid solution with another raid controller, and the Sans Digital Firewire 800 box is a good secondary.

My parts won't come in til thursday or friday according to NewEgg, should have it built by friday night with XP installed. Before I install any programs I'm going into the real project, as I want it up and running before I lose any information from bad partitions or reformatting. So, I'm hoping to be pretty much done tweaking the OS to run flawlessly by next wednesday.

Latin--

When Hydra comes around I'll definitely need a) Redundant storage options. b) A striped Raid array for editing. That MyBook should be for redundant storage of things you don't care about, honestly. I'd be wary trusting MyBooks with my important info as I'm wary about Western Digital in general. That's just me. I've had two WD HDDs fail on me, lost a lot of artwork because I didn't have money for a CD or DVD burner back then.

On that eSata port deal: i agree that PCI-E x1 at least. Which was what I had in mind when I went to look at the SANS DIGITAL FW400/800 enclosure. It's either that or pick up an eSata PCI-E x1 card at the very least which could jack up the price a good 40.00 -> 50.00.

The 4k/2k man handling will probably be up to your NLE. Grading in 2k is going to be fit on my system, or at least I am hoping. After Grading, it's ProRes 4:2:2 quite possibly. This is all speculatory, though until A) I've built the system, B) Final Cut Studio 2 is out and C) Hydra is out and running on my HVX.

By the way. The 965P-DQ6 has 2 PCi-E x1 Slots. The 965P-DS3 has 3 PCI-E x2 slots: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128012

OOOOOOoOOooOoOOo. X1950XT FTW-- I hope. I'm actually not happy that the Video Card blocks one of my PCI-E x 1 slots to be honest. And I never bothered to check that out. >=\

yeah, I have had several bad experiences with Gateway products and Gateway as a company, so I will not be checking any of their products anytime soon...but I'm excited about your box.

Email me(wink wink) :)
